my friends has a 63 ragtop. I help him restore the body. Next i worked on the engine. The engine started. But follishly the next time i tried starting the engine up again. but instead i killed the started motor because there was no gas.I take the blame. So we bought a used starter from BCity in CT it turned the enine for about 5 rotation of the crankshaft and then died. I thought of buying a brand new one but thoought that might not be the problem.
I took one of the old starters and with a battery charger to test it . I got the starter to pop out and i got the it to spin but very slowly .

What is the problem?

Could it be the starter relay??
What could it be??

Thanks for the help

Your test wasn't a good one. You can't test a VW starter like you can a domestic, self-supported starter. A battery charger?

Are you sure the starter's the problem? Hows the battery? Are all battery terminal connections nice and clean (even the ground?) Hows is the bushing in the tranny? Did you put a dab of grease on the starter shaft before jamming it in the tranny?

Hows the J-Man doing? We don't hear much from him anymore. Tell him to come back. We miss him.
