Tried to lower my type III today, I have it all figured out (I know what to do) but I couldnt get the lower ball joint out of its socket.
Its half way out, but now that I've given up, Its stuck half way in and I cant get it to slip back in???
Help!

Do you have both of the lines lined up?

I don't know why they need to be lined up but that is the only way it works...
Also I had a hard time getting my ball joints in and out. I got them out by wiggling it around. Getting it back in I used a jack and put the jack under the spindle and slowly jacked it up and the wiggled and then lower. Just keep playing with it. watch out , sometimes when you get it in, it will pop out like nothing.
This is my car lowered when it is jacked up.

It sits on the stoppers when it is not jacked up. When I get 145s (tires) for the front I will lower the front so when it is jacked up it will be touching the stoppers. |

| I lightly tap the sides, the arms, anything connected. I have never had a problem. maybe pull while you hammer lightly? |

| I used a ball joint seperator(looks like a fork)to break the bj loose. Careful for you may ruin the bj!!! A jack definately helps pull it out all the way. Might try tapping the steering knuckle and/or rotating the whole assembly(if you rotate be careful!). Look and see if the bolt on top of the bj is hitting the knuckle. As putting the bj back into place...have yet to figure out the easiest way. It has to be perfectly straight to slide in. I think I installed the lowers first to get more play in the knuckle. This was just my experience... |

I cut the seal as well on the first one...did they need to be replaced anyhow? Better to replace them now while everything is apart. Should look for german replacements if so. All 4 ran me a lil over $100. Is that a good price? Best to take your time when working with 30year plus cars because of rust and such. Lack of patience caused me to strip 2 bolts, destroy 2 grub screws(lil bastards), and ruin 2 ball joints. Also, DON"T USE AN IMPACT WRENCH!!! |
