View original topic: MY BRAKE LIGHTS DON'T WORK!

I've checked pretty much all you can think of such as bulbs, fuses, wiring, etc. I'm to the point where I'll just have it checked out professionally and shell out the cash to have them fixed. Is there also something I'm overlooking? I even have the complete wiring diagram for my 67 type SB, double checked the wiring like a dozen times, and still i get no brake lights.[/list]

You didn''t mention brake light switches, on the MC. These are electro-mechanical, and can sometimes stick. Try tapping them lightly with a rubber mallet or hammer. Or get new ones, they're cheap and easy to install.

easy way to test brake lights... (note its a pain doing it by yourself,
i set up a little mirror behind the car or something)...
+ Power to switches full time.. from fuse 1 maybe..
So get your test light and ground it somewhere and test the wires
by the switches. (one side of each (assuming dual mc)) should have
power, ie the test light should light up. When your switches 'switch' then
it completes the circuit making your brake lights go on, they are constantly gounded. So if your test light shows juice on one side of the switch pull both of the wires off the switch and jump them together, do your brake lights go on? If so, your switch is bad. only 1 needs to work to have lights, obviously its a better idea to have both working. Usually its the switches.
- test for power into switch
- test for power out of switch when brake pedal pressed.
- if this is good so far still no lights, your problem is with the lights
in the back or the wiring to the back. Take your lenses off and probe
the wires in the back. If you have power when someone taps the
pedal, bulbs or ground. Did they ever work? is the wiring molestered? My 67 square came with no brake lights, horn, some turn signals out, reverse lights out etc, but ive worked through them and got them going, you can too..

HEY, guess what? mine stopped working too!

simple way to check it, i dont know if someone already said this, is to unplug the switch, and connect the 2 wires together, if the lights go on, then its your mc switch. thats what my problem was. before i go get a new one tomorrow, ill try the tapping with the hammer idea  .

hope this helps
