| what were the early cases made out of? I see in 1951 they went to the aluminum/mag alloy. |

| Pure aluminum late '49 and '50 I believe. And prior to that, again an alloy. The AL cases are considerably heavier than the allow cases. |

Here is the service bulletin that states VW went to the "electron" / magnesium case on Jan. 19th, 1951. Cheers.

It should be noted that VW used Mag alloy extensively during the war too, as earlier posts state. Infact VW was the first manufacturer to use Magnesium in quantity through out in a production vehicle. |
