Whats the easiest/cheapest way to strip undercoat/tar from undersides of a bug? Tried a heat gun and scraper, but too time consuming. There has to be an easier way. There's so much on that I can't find the fender bolts.

seriously????

if you're tired allready, you better throw in the towel.

the easiest/cheapest way is to do it yourself with heat and a scraper.

now get your ass back in the garage and start scraping.

I used a wire wheel on an angle grinder, very time consuming, and messy. As you heat the material it kinda globs. Stick with it!

I've heard they sell undercoat remover, but I haven't seen it. It sucks, and I know what you're going through because mine is undercoated also!

Yes Yoda it sucks. But better than having to repair a crap load of rust out spots. If bugman is tired at this point, he needs to pay to have it media blasted... The most effective and in the end really the most value.

Call around, there are many places that will blast the whole car for $300.00.

Sometimes even blasting won't take that stuff off. And if you leave the blasting gun on it too long it will burn through the panel or warp the metal. Most powdercoaters have the ability to "burn" it off. This is the best method I've used so far on fenders, pan, etc.... The paint stripper ( Aircraft type ) are very messy, time consuming, and usually take 4 -5 coats for undercoating.

this tpic is very timely for me. I am actually trying take undercoat off. I am interested in the way to use heat.
I have question. where can I buy heat? how much about?

Big Jim Sat Jul 17, 2004 7:01 pm

 You can buy heat at any licensed firearms dealer or on the corner in many neighborhoods. You should know how to use it before you buy and I wouldn't use it on my VW. :D
Now, if you just want to make some heat, a paint stripper gun from Lowes or the like is cheap and easy. Point it at the undercoating until it is soft and sticky. then scrape it off with a trowel or chisel.
