has anyone ever seen any of these on a bug before? How do they look and fit? I think they look better than the black plastic vent trim. What do you guys think? are these rare?[/img] |

Rare? Judging by what Bruce said in the post below, I suppose not. Maybe the poster would be interested in the ebay link?

Those look like "fake" inserts. The screw holes make be think they're were intended at and "update" to older (60's) Beetles in the early 70's.
They don't look like there were inteneded to replace the black plastic vent that were originally there.
And the ones with the "chrome" just had chrome trim. The main body was still black plastic.
This could be rare... but i would never put it on a car. |

| why not? if they are made to fit in those holes why would you "never" put them on a car? were they not made for a car? |

Well, the fake look has a certain cheese factor associated with it. And, you would also loose the functionality of those vents if you replaced them with these. I have read many posts here where others claimed these vents were a huge contributor to water intrusion - many of them probably did without the vents or blocked them off somehow. I have not had a later model beetle for some time now - mostly '65 and down without these vents.
Now, a set of stainless functional vents would probably look kick ass. |

I suggest you think before speaking.
They are intended for cars without the vents. That's why there are holes for sheetmetal screws.
Would you drill holes in a 67 Beetle and put those on.... I think not. |

Just because someone made something, doesn't mean you should use it. Like spinners on hubcaps... Yeah they're spinners, but are they real? No. Do they look awful? Yes. |

why would they make fake vents for early model cars? that would not make sense and would be very cheesy. that would be backwards.I agree if they would fit and were made to fit and still serve the purpose (having the holes open) they would kick ass. the guy selling them said they would fit and has them labeled as "VW BUG quarter grills side air vent trims NOS stainless, HERE IS a set of VW BUG quarter grills side air vent trims NOS stainless, set of 2" original accsesory~~~ BRAND NEW !!! "
-sounds like a type of trim? that why I thought i would ask you guys first.
(but since Glenn says he would not "never" put them on a car then i guess that settles it, because he has the perfect bug right, if ours could only be like his). we should change the name of the car from a volkswagen beetle to a volkswagen GLENN. It could be a special edition. |

It seems we don't agree on personal taste on cars. Well here's a car that might be more to your likeing...
And look... since it's a Mexican Beetle, you can put those vents on.
Got a problem... take it to the RANTS. |

| Dude, you are an idiot. Why would I like that? you dont know me, but i know you because you blab your personal opinion on eveyones post. I have read a lot of post and replies on this forum and all the replies that you submit are all the same, if you dont have it on your car or if you dont like it then it is a stupid idea and we are all dumb for even asking or thinking about it. Your car bores me, if i saw yours going down the road i would look once, not twice. why dont you use the creative half of your brain. and dont tell me to think before speaking. |

But that's exactly what they are. That is why the majority on here think they are a pretty lame accessory. To each thier own though. Back in the day though, that was the thing to do; update your current car to look like a newer model. As time goes by, you'll see more and more of this "bolt on" stuff that is made for just this kind of thing. I'm sure you've seen "Rossi" headlights? Same thing. |

People have always up-dated thier VW's. When the Ovals came out, some Germans Installed an Oval Window kit in thier Splits. Then in '58 they did the same with Big Windows. I've even seen Splitty's on Mobile.DE with Big Windows.

That is the point look at the way they mount and the rubber gasket to keep them from scratching the paint on your car. |

| yeah , it makes sense now. that is why I asked, because i did not know and just had never seen any before. i saw the rubber gasket but to me I thought maybe that was hard plastic like what is on there now and the stainless steel screwed and attached to it leaving an opening for the vent hole.It did not even cross my mind that they would make them for older cars to look liker newer, that is funny.I thought I had found a rare accessory, now I see the light. Still sounds stupid why anyone would make those. |
