I was reading some welding stuff a while back and saw where a "guru" smith-type in CA sell tree stumps. The stumps are used for a work surface in a shop. You place the work piece on it to hammer it, form it, whatever. The stump absorbs the vibration of the blow. The wood is soft enough not to make its own impression. I'm looking for feedback before I fire up the chain saw.

You can use a tree stump or lots of other pieces of wood, steel, aluminum bondo molds etc for shaping sheet metal and bending small tubing. You can shrink a rippled edge if the stump is hard enough. Check out:
