| So in my search for a bug I have noticed that some have gas door like things in the front on the sides even though inside of the trunk the gas tank clearly has a gas cap. So I don't think it's a gas door. I'm just wondering what they are and which splits had them (what years, ect.) thanks guys! |

those are crotch coolers. pop 'em open to, well, cool your crotch. creates a draft inside cockpit to keep cool.
i'm not sure about the years. i'd guess it was a deluxe option and maybe all years but not all splits came w/ them. |

| Crotch coolers were for deluxe beetles only. Ran from mid 51 to end of "real" splitwindow era (Sept. 52). |

Sounds like a bit of 'Zwitter envy' :)
