What is the advantage of a type 2 tranny in a beetle?

Mine is starting to make a grind when going in reverse - but only if i'm going slow.

I have a rebuilt type 2 tranny w/ maybe 1000 miloes on it- can I stick this in my Beetle if I have to? I know i need to get special mounts or soemthing for it (seen the 'kits' advertised). But what woudl the advantage be?

very strong trans. usually in off-road cars or some drag cars?

where are you at? i could trade you a good 74 Super Beetle or 69 standard beetle IRS plus some cash for your Bus box, if its the right model...

does it grind when you are in reverse going slow, or when you are moving slow and shift into reverse?

The grind occurs when in reverse, going slow.

I am in central Florida, a bit ways from soCal

Well generally the reverse gear is a rather loud gear, they get even louder as the Trans Fluid goes bad/the gear wears. Make sure the 'grind' your hearing isn't just normal gear noise.

reverse is louder than the forward gears because it is straight cut versus a helical cut gear.

it will whine at higher rpms, but it shouldnt sound like a gowl. definitely check your gear oil level...

It depends on which type 2 box you are referring to as to whether it is any stronger than a bug box or not. The 002 or what is typically refered to as the three rib tranny is really no stronger than a bug box. It has lower gearing in it to pull the additional weight of the bus but the main shaft and 3-4 gears are the same as the bugs of the era and rather weak. The later 091 or 6 rib boxes are the ones that will take a lot of abuse. If you want to put on in a bug though the hockey stick is in the wrong place. This either requires a different intermediate section to allow a bug nosecone so that you can run a stock shift rod. The other option is to leave the tranny alone and have a shift rod set up on top of the tunnel. The cv joints are also different from the bug but that is rather minor. I'm sure there are other things I am forgetting but I am not all that familiar with the conversion just stating what I know.
