my old track (control) arm bushings were dry-rotted, so i purchased a set of urethane's from aircooled.net. i read in my VW-Service manual that the old bushings are supposed to be pressed out (hydraulic). being the cheap-ass student that i am, i got out most of the old bushing w/ a flathead and stuck what was left in a bucket of carb cleaner. after two days, they came out spotless, no rubber whatsoever....
so.. today i tried to install the urethanes, which by the way, i was told would simply slide in place. not happening :x
i noticed there is a 1-1.5MM thick "ring" inside the bushing hole.. it almost looks like it was part of the old rubber bushing.. i say this b/c there is a noticable 'depression' on the OUTSIDE of this ring, suggesting it is a separate piece.
which brings me to my question.. is this 'ring' the reason why they call for a hydraulic press to remove them?? in other words, is it supposed to come out with the old bushing, or is it a permanent part of the arm? i'm assuming it's supposed to come out, b/c without it, it looks like the bushings would be a perfect fit..
also, how much of an interference fit should there be?? are they really supposed to 'slide' in place??
man, a nice digi camera would really help rite now  i hope this makes sense... |

| yes its supposed to come out, no its not part of the arm. being the cheap ass that i am too, take a hacksaw put the blade through the hole reattach it to the saw, and cut it. once you've cut through it, you'll be able to pry it out with a screwdriver. |

| Once you get the metal bushing out, which was originally bonded to the rubber bushing, your urethane bushings will slide right in. They don't use the metal piece. Be sure to coat them good with the lubricant that should have come with them. |
