View original topic: 68 rear Fenders fit a 72 Super?

I heard that the REAR fenders from 68-72 are all the same. I have a 72 1302 SuperBeetle. It's an early 72 so it has a flat dash and reg. taillights (no the elephant foot kind).. anyways, I'm in the market to purchase a new pair of rear fenders for my beetle (since I'm getting new paint), and have come across an excellent pr. from a 68. Just want to make sure they'll bolt right on. Thanks so much for your help!

Yes they will but the holes for the tailight housings will be different.
68- 70 are one size and 71-72 are larger...

Can anyone give me a quick lesson on how the taillight holes should be for a 1971 standard beetle? I picked this car up for a song. The paintwork is done and looks good, but the taillight holes are different from left to right. Thanks in advance.

I could try and get some measurements off the different years for you

If you use 68 rear fenders you can just use 68 rear tail lights no problems. A lot of people think the smaller tail lights look cooler anyway.

I took a look at the fenders on my way to work this morning. The fenders have one large hole on each fender, and they appear to be symetrical.

That hole is the only hole on the left fender. The right fender has two more holes. one above and one below the main hole, and slightly closer to the engine lid. These holes are smaller than the main, middle hole, and look like they are "supposed to" be there (as opposed to an amateur cutting job.

It is the spacing of the 2 smaller holes that mount the tail light housing that make the difference. If you don't get them right then the lights will look funky. Which size lights are you using the 68-70 or the 71-72?

Actually, I have neither right now. I bought the car as a shell, but the body man I bought it from has not been able to come up with the lights that he swears were there when he first painted the car. So I have no taillights yet.

The left fender has only the one hole, the right side has three as I described earlier. For the 71 tailllights, are there supposed to be three holes on each side?

I've noticed that 71-72 taillights are much more rare than 68-70, so I'm wondering what my options are. I did rather have the 1971 lights it's supposed to have.
