| I am rebuilding a 79 covertible. I had the connecting rods refurbished at a machine shop in Raleigh, NC. I just sealed the engine case and when I tried to put on my last piston, the shaft would not slide into the connecting rod bearing. All the others slipped in without even using a hammer to tap them. Please tell me I dont have to break the engine apart and take the connecting rod back to the machine shop. Any suggestions? I did not attempt to force the shaft into the bearing. HELP! :( |

Sounds like the machine shop did not hone the wrist pin bushing to spec.
Which shop was that?
The only way I have fixed that same problem without taking it off the crank and sending it back...l is to get a deep socket and wrap some 220 grit wet dry sandpaper around it until it fits snug and with WD-40 work it in and out round and round for a few minutes at a time until you get the wrist pin to go in with some restistance. It should just be a "press fit" by hand but if it is a bit tight and goes in with a small amount of pesuasion, then that is better than sloppy.
You should be able to hand hone it out in a half hour or less, unless the bushing was pressed in and not sized any at all... |
