I've never done it before but here's something from a post I found by using the search function (and now I know I need to keep my engine lid locked all the time):

You can hotwire it with a jumper wire made out of 12 gauge wire and alligator clips from the + side of the coil to the big red wire on the alternator. If at night and there are only two wires on the alternator(one red and the other blue) then connect another wire to the small blue wire on the alternator and it will charge as well.

As stated, run a jumper from the heavy guage wire on the generator/alternator to the (+) side of the coil. Then you need to jump the starter from the large wire on the solenoid to the "key" wire (small) on the solenoid. The engine will crank.

Basicallt the alternator wire supplies power to the ignition and jumping the starter will crank the engine.

Hiya All,

It strikes me that we may all be a little less secure with this sort of information being posted. The original question/post in this thread is akin to the "how do I remove (or recode) the radio" kind of posts. There is a good possiblity that the poster is a person who wants to boost a part or a car but lacks the techno know-how for this particular model.

Just my opinion and I know you guys are being friendly and helpful, but............

Mike... trust me. this isn't rocket science. My 74 is parked in the garage with the key in it. If a pro wanted to steal my car, they'd roll it out and have it on a tow truck in 30 seconds.

The only way to prevent it from being stolen is to chain it to something and remove the 4 tires.

If your VW doesn't have a steering lock, i could drive it away on 10 seconds. Hot wire the coil and push start it. I'd be down the block before you even got to the window to see it drive away.

Hiya Glenn,

Your point is well taken. I can even get past the steering lock on a Bus.

But........is this the kind of information we really want to be spreading around? Granted, the really bad guys will get what they want. But how about the kids who don't know how (check this guy who's asking - only one post)? Yes, they may find out somewhere else. But it seems that is still no reason to just drop this kinda info in their lap here.

Just my opinion.

Like i said... it's not rocket science.

Of course we could just say "Do a search" and anybody with two cents worth of brains will figure out how to do that...so by not responding to this person's question we would prevent the person with less than two cents worth of brains from stealing someone's beetle.

But if they have so few brains to begin with they may not even be able to figure out which end of the beetle has the alternator...
