Is it possible to install a thermostat rod whith the engine in the car without removing the fan shroud. The flaps are already installed, I just would like to add the thermostat itself.

[b]I thought so....
I have found a rod and thermostat that I wanted to fit too...
Thermostats & Rods are extremely hard to find in Australia...
Most were just diconnected and thrown away by VW mechanics, as advised by VWAustralasia....
They didn't have to throw them away, they could have just adjusted them so they didn't work....

Lee, I wouldn't worry about the lack of thermostat there in the land of perpetual summer. Keep in mind that VW of Mexico stopped installing the thermostat in the new Bugs at least 5 years ago.

They stopped fitting thermostats, in Mexico, since the 1993 model year. However, this was on fuel injected engines with long reach plugs, small sized valves and (most importantly) hydraulic lifters. The VW type 1 engine is not consider 'warm' until it reaches a minimum of about 70 degrees C (158 degrees F). That still makes a 'summer' on the chilly side. Also, it should be remembered that it gets very cold in Mexico, up in the mountains, which is where most Bugs live in that country.
