I've had 2 or 3 supers in my time... The problem I always had to fix was where the vents were by the rear quarter panel windows would rust out real bad... I have a 74 super right now, that I'm debating on fixing that or just trying to find one with less cancer...
Someone told me that with the late super beetles they put a different type of insulation in the body that would absorb the water the trickled in from those vents under the rear 1/4 panel windows and the vents behind the rear window and over time it just ate itself from the inside out. not forsure if that is true, but it would explain my dilema... |

| Im looking at a 74 beetle, does this make it a super beetle or did they still make the regulars in 74. |

| Read the first post in this thread. That will tell you how to tell the Super from the Standard. Even thought it's 74 it still could be either one. |

| I really enjoyed reading the article on the Super Beetle. I just recently got me a 72 Super. I to have a little bit of a shimmy at around 55 mph. I've already planned to start replacing the bushings and steering damper. Thanks again for the good info! :bug_green: |

Hi,
Is there an engine size difference between the beetle and super beetle. I have a 1979 1200cc and a 1974 1600cc engine. Can those be used for either one?
Thanks,

| Nice job! I must point out that the Special Addition Love Bug in 1974 was not on a super beetle platform. It was a standard beetle that was actually marketed as a down grade from the standard beetle. That is to say it had no chrome goodies & a lower price. |

| Wonderful article BTW! I am an avid Super Beetle freak, in case you have not read my other rants. I could give two wits about value, I like the uniqueness of every car I've owned (or been owned by) as each one has been very different from the last. The Supers are just dandy for my taste. That chrome bar mentioned above is a Strut Bar and is a piece of crap. REMOVE it and start rust repairs ASAP! Flat window supers (before 05/73) have a tendancy to split a windshield when the suspension needs attention, which is another reason for the bulbous windshield of later Supers. It allows the glass to handle body flex better. The speedos on most supers gave out consistently between 70K and 80K miles...if yours doesn't work, I feel your pain. There were far more stupid things done to them as well since the availability of 'glas parts is much greater. i.e 30's Ford hoods and what not. When replacing bushings, always go with red urethane as they tend to last longer. They can make the ride stiff, but not too noticeably. Pay close attention to your '73 Super if made before May as they used a smaller strut cartridges in the earlier Supers, and they tend to be hard to find, unless you're rich and can go with Bilsteins. If you have shock absorbing bumpers, you're a late one so no worries. I just rebuilt the entire front end on my '73 Super for under $200 minus a steering box (hell to find new) in less than a day, as the front ends are much easier to work on without all the king and link junk to cart around. Peace - Bugger :) |

hey there i am a silent fan of the super beetle even though i have a standard 69 1500, i had a super beetle earlier which i reluctantly sold coz of lack of space, now i have the opportunity to buy another super beetle i think its a 1975 with sunroof, the car has been sitting in a closed garage for about 9 years now!! it has original paint and 1600 engine with 32000km according to the speedo. i have no clue if the engine will turn or not and i dont know much about supers so dont know what exactly to check and even if i do check i WILL buy it and restore it so......... need to source parts. its extremely rare in our country its a 1974/75 1303S Sliding sunroof, Right hand drive model disc brakes up front and shock absorbing bumpers. where do i get parts for this and how much should one of these fetch today?
help emails would be appreciated, thanks for your time in advance!

All convertibles were built by Karmann in Osnabruck, Germany. |
