View original topic: Pulled the motor, yesterday...

Well, yesterday was a grand day, we pulled the motor out of my Super, and had a go at fixing some problems. Bill Santana is awesome, and I could not have done this without him. (He could have done it without me, but I needed to learn, and learn I did!)

Replaced a cracked alternator stand, muffler system, took out the points and put in a Compufire electronic ignition and new Bosche Blue Coil. Also, did some fuel system work, after we had thought we we're done... (Someone before I owned the vehicle, had left the old fuel pump and filter, up front where they're supposed to be, in the system, along with an electric in the back.) The old one, up front, died and clogged up. I had to call Bill after we had thought we we're done, and help me get back to the shop, which was not a given that the Super was going to make it, and figure out what the deal was. Bill cut the old pump and filter (after we found it was there) out of the system and everything works great. (I will be putting a new pump, in later this week...)

We still have some issues to deal with, new fan, electrical work, and gas tank, but other than that  it runs great.

Thanks Bill! You are the man, and I thought I would share my experience. I'm sure learning a lot. My GTI take less work, but is nowhere near as fun. 8)

Cool...keep us informed on your progress.

I'm getting ready to pull my engine out also...Need to send the case out to Rimco for some machining. I've gathered most of my parts, soon I'll have my RAT rod on the street

Hey Shag! I definitely want to see some pix of the RAT rod. Also, what are you going to be doing to your engine, once you pull it?

Yeah, I need to take some more pics. There's only one posted.
The engine will be (finally, after much debate) a 78x94 2165cc. Jake really hooked me up with some used (test)parts. I got the whole rotating mass out of Jake's 2165, the same engine he won the Dyno-Day competition with....crank, H-beam rods, lightened flywheel, HD clutch/pres.plt, rear pully, all balanced. also bought some used (test parts, lol) 94mm p/c. will be running 44 webers on top of CBs 044 wedge port heads. the valve train will be of Jake's recommendation. He seems confident that we can get 170hp.
The car is a "stock-looking" 73 Super. It's a very solid and straight car, all original. Will be doing some suspension upgrades.
Still have to buy some parts but I'm almost there...
