View original topic: Over Heating/Whinning Noise When I Shift.

Ok 1st off my Fatty is still running hot should the fan sit perfect with the dog house or is there suppose to be a 1/4" between the two ???

and 2nd when I shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to third it makes like a whinning noise any ideas what that might be and someone told me to put gear oil 90 Weight in the transaxle now I did that should I put a whole bottle in or just up too the 17mm allen nut.

If someone could get back to me on these I would be so thankfull I'm so depressed because I can't figure out what is wrong with the damn thing and it's driving me nutts.

Thanks Jason.

It sounds like you have an early style fan in a doghouse fan shroud. They are about 1/4 inch narrower than a doghouse fan shroud. As far as overheating that wouldn't help any. Is all of your tin in place and properly sealed. Engine tuned up properly?

I'm not sure what the whinning noise is. You should fill the tranny up until the level is just even with the bottom of the fill plug.

only whines between those gears not from 3rd to 4th?

does it whine when you push the clutch in or just as you move the gear shift into gear?

I agree with ekimthemad... sounds like an early fan. but I have seen them in engines before that did not really show signs of overheating due to just that. You may have some other issues.
But for sure get the wider fan.

and fill till it runs out the fill plug hole.

the whining you hear may be the beginning of the release( throw out) bearing failure.

It's only when I shift from one gear to the next 3rd to 4th it's fine but 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd it's whinning.

I thought my troubles where bad it's sure to be worse by the end of the week.

Does this wining happen just when you push in the clutch? If so, it's probably your TO bearing.

Yeah just when I push it in and shift from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd

Yup, it's the TO bearing. Not expensive to replace, only a PITA. Ever pull a motor?

Nope haven't had the pleasure of doing it.

Well sounds like you're going to find out. You'll learn ALOT by pulling it.
Just remember this: While you have the engine out replace any seals, worn parts or tin. This is the time to do it so you won't need to do it again for a long while.

it's easy. Got tools? A few beers? A manual, maybe? This is the best part of owning a Beetle...The greasy messy mechanical stuff. I find it quite therapeutic, it helps to control the "sickness"(everyone here has it, )
