View original topic: Grab Handle, Removed Dash

Hi, I removed the padded dash in my 72, 1302s, I filled in the vent holes nicely, but am having a hell of a time trying to get a grab handle to fit. The earlier ones that fit flush to the metal are about 1.5" shorter in length, so they won't fit the pre-existing holes. Then the longer handles are made to fit over the dash pad, so they won't fit flush to the metal dash. What can I do to fix this problem? Perhaps I'll have to make my own handle out of wood?

Thanks for your help!

have you tried filing down the original dash grab handle screws so it fits? other than that maybe a wooden one would suit your car - where did you find all that dash lining of wood?

I'm pretty handy hu? I made it all myself. Got some Rosewood, and some Cedar where I could. I fit the pieces, sanded (a lot), stained and glossed. It took a while, but I wanted a wooden dash, and I made one, since I couldn't find anything that fit my standards. I didn't have enough $$$ to weld my dash and re-paint, so I improvised with wood. I think it looks nice. (The cedar adds a nice scent to the car anyway). Thanks for noticing :)

well your doing a damn god job of being handy. that dash looks sick. you might want to get and older steering wheel with wood trim on it too. that will make look a lot sweeter. and the filing down the screws on the handle is your safest bet.
why couldn't all women be as handy as you, girl!

Wheeew! Well, I just finished. It took almost all day, but I cut, sanded, primed & stained my own custom rosewood dash handle to match the rest of my car! I'm awesome! I'll get a pic up soon... in about 20 mins. But here's the steering wheel I'm getting to match :)

Here we are, my dash, almost finished. I'm waiting for a couple vent pieces to put in the laft and center vent holes on top of the dash and then I'll be done!
