Both of you make me drool... My paint isn't bad, but it will not be re-done until next, just before Law School.

YB, are you going to keep the yellow? It looks nice. Also, if you don't mind, what kind of price range are you looking at?

Is that a dash pad painted or is it the metal without out the pad? I was thinking of painting my dash pad but need more info first. It looks really nice. Keep up the good work.

-I've seen photos of your Orange 73 on here before. The paint looks fabulous! Hope mine looks just like it, only Yellow..

-Yep, I'll be keeping my car yellow, otherwise I'd have to change my e-mail! Just kidding, Yellow is my favorite color, so bright and cute. I can't help but smile when I'm in my Yellow bug..

- Nope, I didn't paint the dash. I removed the ugly dash pad and the factory Yellow paint was glimmering beneath. It was in such pristine condition because it had been covered by a dash pad for 30yrs.

Thanks guys!

Barry- Oh yeah... I'm not going to spend an arm and a leg on paint... perhaps I'll go for a 4,500 paint job in a few years after I graduate college. For now I's gonna be ~1500$. 3 Coats of Urethane Yellow & 2 coats of clear gloss.

thanks megan, keep posting pics in the superbeetle gallery showing your progress!

are you sure you need a respray? if you have rust on some panels then there's no stopping you wirebrushing the rust down to bare metal, rust treating it, priming it, glossing it & then laquering it yourself. my bug (bertie) has had lots of those little repair jobs done, & although you can see it in some lights because of the slight difference in colour, no-one else notices & just thinks "the paint looks fabulous" lol

check out my websites when you're bored for some ideas, here's the latest section... www.freewebs.com/carlscoolbeetles7

as for my paint, bertie had a VERY good respray in the past, done so well that i couldn't tell, but pictures do it a lot of justice, like i said it's had a lot of rust repair done & it's been keyed VERY deeply along the drivers side. also, i would never reccommend a cheap respray because my dad's van was resprayed for about £400 & 2 years later it looks worse than what it did before!

after looking at your pics again, from what i can see, you don't need a respray, that paint will really polish up. go to a paint specialist who mixes paint etc, & say you want something that you can really rub into the paintwork to bring the shine back. i was given some stuff that i just kept putting bits at a time on a cloth & then put a lot of strength into polishing it into the paint - that's how i got my roof to shine again! see how well it was working on my mates car after 5 secs of using it.... see how faded it was

Thanks for the reply.. Believe me, the pics make Ol' Filbert looks spankin' new. But on his right side, I was hit a few years ago (some drunk that got arrested, I had to testify in court!) and got the passenger side all repainted. It looks nice! But the top, middle and driver's side are 30yr. old paint, Very dull.. quite a colour difference from the passenger side. It definately needs a new coat, all the same exact colour. You're bug looks immaculate. I'm envious! Hopefully mine looks as elegant in a few days.. I'm a bit worried that the shop will paint it a colour I don't like.. either too light & creamy or mustard like..eeek! I'll be praying to the VW god for the 5 days he's in the shop! Wish me luck...

P.s. I think I'll be putting Yellow fur in the trunk, thanks to you. What an idea! Exotic and significant... I love it!

I love the right hand drive. Classic and practical since you're in England. I love it! Hey, by the way, what size tyres do are you running, they look great. Sturdy, smooth and safe. I'm looking to upgrade without loosing too much vintage/classic appeal. Wow you're a youngin' too, just like me! Praise to the young VW crowd, and the old of course. They tought us what we know. Keep rockin'

it's a shame to hear about the passenger side being hit, but at least the drunk got arrested! are you sure that it's not just you that can tell the differnce between the shades of yellow on the new paint compared to the old? use some of that stuff on your paint then grab some random person in the street & ask them if they notice anything! if you want a nice paint job though then go for it, just avoid a really basic respray because my dad regretted it

thanks for your comments, the way i see it bertie is 31 years old & he's always been a daily driver, so he's bound to have defects in the paint etc, but i think my repair jobs & the work i've done has been worth it after the comments i get from people like yourself :D he's done 160 thousand miles on the original engine - i don't know whether this is pretty high for a bug, but i take pride in saying it though

i've took down the tyre sizes for you, bertie's running on empi's with a graphite grey centre with chrome spinners, the tyres are..

Rear: 185/65 R15
Front: 175/55 R15 (Smart Car tyres)

yup us young'uns know what a real car is, & i plan to be driving air cooled VW's til the day i fall off the pirch

Megs,
Are you painting in the original color? The shop should be able to mix the paint based on the color code, or at least match the paint to your dash.

On my Bus, I had to repaint the white portion twice...First time (i sent out to have the paint mixed) it was too bright, almost a pure white. Didn't notice until I got the Bus out of the spray booth and completely un-masked. My supplier had to re-mix another batch, and this time they got it right...perfect match pastel white. Only, I had to eat my own labor to re-spray the white again...my supplier ate the paint cost. The red part of the Bus was mixed perfect the first time, a great match to the original color.

Anywho...if your car is not to your liking, then have the shop spray it again. You need to approve of the color(and their quality of work) before they put the car back together.

Oh, and thanks for the bit of praise...I'm not young like some of you whippersnappers, but I'm not a geezer.. yet! :D
Keep posting pics.

Hey megs!
How did those vents work out for you?

YellowBeetleSB Sat Sep 11, 2004 7:02 pm

Those vents were perfect! You're a genius! Thanks so much for your invaluable help! My dash is 100x better with those 2 vent holes nicely covered.
