View original topic: Swap STD chassis with Super?
Lynchmob Thu Aug 26, 2004 6:12 pm

I know the big difference in the front ends of the cars (Torsion bar vs. Macpherson coil-overs), but I'm wondering if you could swap a STD bug chassis with that of a Super and then add on the front axle / beam from another STD bug?!

I have a 1974 in need of a donor chassis, and I'm seeing a lot of 1974 Super cars kicking around...

Optionally, anyone know the difference between a 1973 STD and 1974? I saw a 1973 for cheap on a newspaper classifieds site and wondered if it would fit the bill. I'm mainly keen on the IRS rear end (my car is currently on a 1968 swing axle)

Any info. would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Way more trouble than it's worth.

Like Glenn says..... you would have to cut the front frame head off and weld on a Standard Beetle frame head... alot of work but possible none the less.

Plenty of Beetle pans out there or you can ( with alot of work)
Convert your pan to IRS... there is a current thread on this the last few days in the Ghia forum

"all...standard bug body's can be made to fit on all STANDARD bug pans"

with the differnce being that the later year bug bodies don't fit on earlier pans..vice versa without moving the rear mounts like 3" ?

so the 73 should work nicely.

The super pan is about 1-1.5" longer than a standard if I remember correctly...shit...I'm drunk...I can't remember shit.

Ok, got the idea. Essentially, all post-1968 STD pans are interchangable (hence why my 1974 on '68 is pretty solid considering), but fitting a Super pan would require some interesting welds and messing about... that's what I was unsure of.

Especially the length difference sounds like a pain in the ass.

Thanks very much for the info!

I'll keep digging about for a good 1974 STD chassis or donor vehicle I think.

he could use a super chassis under a standard body if he changed to a standard frame head on the super chassis, essentially making it a standard chassis. I'm finding a lot of supers with pretty good pans and chassis but hard front end damage. They make good chassis to graft in a new ball joint or link pin frame head for baja's and dune buggys.

the super pan is the same size from the headboard(master cyl.bolts to)
back.
the only difference is the frame head.
change the frame head with a standard and you have a standard frame.
but it's all moot as the pans are easer to replace then changeing the frame head!!
