| I was reading in the latest issue of VW Trends mag. the article about the split 52 black split window. In the article it says that the body of the bug was dipped, block sanded and painted. My question is what does it mean to have a bug dipped, and what are the pros and cons of doing it. Also what conditions of a bug that could be dipped (meaning for some it may not be necessary and other may be too far gone.) thanks let me know! |

| They dipped the body in a tank full of chemicals to strip off all the old paint etc. Personally, I think its a bad idea. Unless you can re-dip the body in a tank of primer afterwards because so many areas inside the crevices, behind the quarter panels, areas where you cant see will be left to bare metal and the car will basically rust out in the seams where there is no primer. A spray gun full of primer will only reach so many areas. |

i have gone between dipping my 59 and just blasting. i talked with people in both businesses.
after dipping the company i was talking to said they would dip in another chemical (don't remember what it was called now) to seal the inside of the heater channels etc.
after talking with people that have had cars dipped i heard that the solution they used continued to "run" out of areas of the car for months and month. i don't know how true this is but just what i heard.
i went with blasting on mine.
i know people have bitched about media falling out of places for a while after blasting too. |

Any place that does chemical dipping USUALLY also does zinc coating (or something similar) and primer dips.
There's also places that do electo-plating style to stop rust.
I wish there was a place locally that did that. :( It seems port cities usually have these facilities (dipping boats, zincing' them etc) |
