There is a lot of info on collecting cars but not much on the VW's It says
60's nostalgia has pushed prices through the roof. But don't be greedy:
Drawback to the "microbus' weak engine, poor safety rating- worry car fans
who say collectibles should be models that were outstanding when they hit
the market! I say they were and still are!

anybody wanna buy a 65 21 window bus?

Stanw3 Fri Sep 17, 2004 7:52 pm

That's some cool info - thanks for sharing it! I have a 64 21 window that is fresh from the paint booth - show quality paint. Makes me feel all the better about what I paid for it! :) Jerry Seinfeld - I've got a bus for you!

Lind Fri Sep 17, 2004 8:08 pm

everyone please note everyone that the pre-64 microbuses are not on that list because they are so worthless that you can't even sell them. I will haul them off for free though......

53 0val Fri Sep 17, 2004 8:28 pm

Haul a few over to my house Lind. :D

WHO FUCKIN' CARES???

i don't own vw's for their supposed "investment values" or their so-called "collectability". i own them because i love them and i enjoy working on them and driving them.
i've seen enough of the "investors" fuck the scene up with their overinflated prices and sleazy, money making bull-shit that it makes me wanna puke.
i'm also REALLY fuckin sick and tired of seeing this wsj article being posted all over the place.

Lind Fri Sep 17, 2004 9:29 pm

investing in cars is a stupid thing to do because they don't just go up in value. they require a continued investment in storage and upkeep. someone who doesn't know cars can easily have their investment go down. look at that firetruck that is for sale right now. that thing was a cover car on HVWs fifteen years ago. I bet it would have sold for more back then. sure, they do go up in value if you treat them right, but the people who are buying them only for investment purposes generally don't know what to look for to begin with. look at porsche speedsters and mercedes 300SLs. they were going for huge money in the late 80s. both of those models are worth like half of what they were worth back then. it was because of a feeding frenzy and a limited number of cars. the same thing is starting to happen with 23-window buses. the big limit on price is that there are a lot more 23s out there than speedsters. it will crash when the stupid money realizes that they don't have air conditioning.

I totally agree. I drive buses because I love them. if everyone quit liking buses tomorow, the only thing that would change for me is the size of my collection.

I think that it would be funny if the prices of '64 21-windows shot up all of the sudden, but '65s and 23s stayed the same. I have thought for a while that 21-windows aren't getting the respect that they deserve compared to 23-windows. granted, I'm somewhat a snob with my collection and my newest bus is a '61 and I feel a little iffy about that one because it is a late '61 with low hinge doors, but as far as I know there aren't any high hinge flipseat westies. I would take a nice original 21-window over a rusty 23-window any day of the week.

Captoaster Fri Sep 17, 2004 9:49 pm

Jon and Lind I agree! I don't want to see the price go big as I want to be able to afford to drive them and enjoy them and repair and restore them! But I also like to stay informed and that was the reason I hand copied the jist of what was in the article! ! It was just info! Heck the article even has a color bus on the front and for the WSJ there isn't much color! Maybe I should of put it in rants cause that is what it is generating!

'64 21-Windows are dead, it's all about '67 sliding door panels (bench only) and rabbit trucks.

Diesel is the future

Is this restored or ? I haven't seen that many SELL in the $15-$25K range.

Uniballer Fri Sep 17, 2004 11:11 pm

Eh this collector car market is crap...I was (and still am) a Cadillac lover. The 59 caddys with the big ass fins were going for over $30k back in the late 80s early 90s....now you can pick up a awsomely restored one for $20k All those guys buying them up got bit in the ass now. Same thing will happen with splittys...I can see the demand for them going up over the past few years...it will climax then plumit....just drive em love em and take care of em..screw the money

I agree that 23 window prices have shot thru the roof and it is mainly due to investor types. However, I have to say that another reason why prices have gone up is due to the high cost to restore one to decent condition. Top shops like WCC usually get 20,000+ just for painting and interior :(

ill second that. i wish my buses were only worth about $100 each!

AndrewM Sat Sep 18, 2004 5:52 am

I think the English should also take some of the blame for artificially inflating the prices as of late. http://thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=106373
That looks like a nice bus but for $33,133.88...fucking forget it.

Paxil - Lithium - Midol - you take your pick John but please take something. You are no fun at all anymore!

Quote: I also like to stay informed

stay "informed" of what? overinflated, fake prices based on what? bogus auction prices? some extreme cases of very high and overpaid prices which catch the eye of the media and therefore must be the way it is or the way things are heading? being informed means being involved, not reading the wsj and other over-hyped automotive publications.

and don't worry Stanw3, i'm still the same warm, cuddly person inside! i just ger really bent out of shape when people read things like the wsj article and get visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads, thinking that every POS is worth a million dollars. there are, and have been, plenty of examples of this here on this site alone. here's a perfect example. read the initial posting (and subsequent posts too), and then look at the pics. do you think this is a good "get rich quick" plan? i don't. but hey, bring it to california, and you're set for life.

183% increase from what? $10?

TimB Sat Sep 18, 2004 10:07 am

Yep just like a lot of you bus owners I can't stand the money making scammers that only buy the vehicles to make a profit and believe me there are more of those types of people in CA than anywhere. Lind, you are 100% correct that investing in cars is not a smart investment with the storage, maintanence/upkeep and registration. That's what the wall street journal should have included in it's article.

53 0val Sat Sep 18, 2004 10:07 am

The whole bubble of car prices has to break soon. People are paying upwards of $100,000 for '56 Chevys. A car they made in the tens of thousands. Stupid money is investing in Detroit iron. Clones are everywhere. Anyone can make anything from a '50s Corvette to a '70s GTO out of parts found in junk yards and catalogues. I staying with VWs and real people.
