I am going to buy a bunch of it. The pieces are each only 45 " long and there is nothing that can be done about that, it is precut.
But it is the right color gray.

I will have plenty extra to share.

Do you own that roll? It looks like I'll be needing some...

Major Woody,
Yeah, grey is the color, the pics of the two that were in my '67 SO-42.

I bought replacements from so23westfalia.com before he started doing the pre-made grey ones. My are white in color, close to the body paint. Now for new curtains!

right click properties, another cool item from vwcurtains.

You dink! What a coincidence. Two days since the last post...

Anyways... Yeah, Chris. My bungees are beat, and are the same shade as the ones youre looking at. I might hit you up for a few lengths. Keep up the good work.

No problem guys. The stuff is being shipped right now, 100 pieces, all just under 4 feet long. I'll take a closeup photo when it arrives.

They sell that thin brass stuff for the crimps in any decent hobby shop. Just bend it around something, crimp it on the bungee material, make some puncture marks and voila! Just like original.

...or make it easy on yourself and just buy them from Sean!

I assume you are running a rod like this

right?
I'll expose myself as clueless.... what's up with the bungee?
I have no bungee.

* NEVER MIND
new question... how does the bungee attach?

Major Woody Fri May 26, 2006 10:44 am

Yes Lorse they use that type of rod along the top. Along the bottom there is a length of gray 1/8" bungee cord secured at both ends with a single sheetmetal screw and finishing washer. On the long wall, there is one long cord with a single hold-down hook in the center, similar to a mini version of an EMT clamp, secured with a single sheet metal screw. The hold down is just bent galvanized sheet metal , probably 18 guage. You could make it of plain steel and clearcoat it and that would be fine. Mine was there, I was lucky.

The bottoms of the curtains tuck under the bungee to keep them from blowing around. You can see photos of the setup in the gallery. If you see an SO-42 with anything other than bungee cords, the owner has done their own thing as that would not be stock.

I have been looking for three years for gray bungee cord material, this is the first I have seen any.

The back hatch uses a rod along the top and the bottom of the window. The rods are unequal length, and the top hatch rod has a center support to hold it in position and stop it from sagging.

The rods on the cargo doors are different from the rods on the other windows. They protrude 3/16" further--at least they did on my '67. I don't know why that is, as the windows themselves are all identical.

The bungee is mounted to the bus itself under the window and holds the curtain against the bus. It's looped and then a brass crip holds it together. Ascrew is then screwed in through the loop to the body. There's a pic of one above and in my ad as well. So NO, it has nothing to do with an icebox!

Here's a quasi-decent curtain match, hack the picture for the link:

Yep, I just bought a set of rods from bastardbus. He only had one cargo door rod and it is larger. Fortunately he knew this or I would have bought an extra rod that I couldn't use. Now I just need the rear rods and one more cargo door rod.... and now I know that I need some bungees.

oh yeah, and an icebox and a passenger seat and a spice rack......

The rear cargo door is longer than the front, my guess is so it looks uniform.

The rear lower rods are usually broken. I pull the rods out of bays so I can make my own or sell them to folks who want to do it themselves.

Major Woody Fri May 26, 2006 11:24 am

That is what I did, Crofty. Both the lower hatch rod and both door rods were missing on my bus. Lind sent me some material out of a bay and I was able to make perfect copies by using a pair of nails clamped in a vise as a ghetto bender. Then I polished them and had them clear powdercoated. They look super nice.

Fancy Pants powdercoating maniac!

So now who's gonna bust out the flooring!?

lorse Fri May 26, 2006 11:39 am

I'll stick with my flooring... cause that's how I roll

:?: This I didn't know. I got two cargo door ones from empicollector and they seemed to fit fine. I guess maybe I got 'em right. Now I'm curious though...when I get home I'm busting out the tape measure. What's the difference in length? I also just scored a set of orginal rears with the all important center mount. They're a little bent, but I managed to straighten one pretty well. However, when I went to mount them they seemed too long. I suspect it's just because they were so trashed and the center bends look like they need to be pushed together more. Also just got my Sunbrella fabric so it's off to the seamstress next week. I used the awning/marine fabric. It's a little "stiff" off the roll but I washed a small piece and it seemed to soften up . I think over time it should work quite well.

Major Woody Fri May 26, 2006 1:26 pm

Hmm, mine are the same length, just project out farther from the door.
