View original topic: What is the correct way to set valves?

I am trying to adjust the valves on my 1971 VW beatle motor. I understand the clearance is .006". What I do not understand is the locations of each piston before I set the space. I brought piston #1 to TDC and set the valves. I then rotated the crank until #4 was at the top of the stroke and adjusted the valves. What I noticed is that the rotor was not pointing at the #4 position. The same held true for the #2 and #3 cylinders. Should I rotate the crank until the rotor is pointing at the cylinder location I am trying to set before I adjust them?

Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!
As you can tell I am a newbe at this.

Yes you need to make sure the rotor is pointing at the cyl. you are setting. If you just go by the piston being at the top of the stroke you might catch the piston at the top of the exhaust stroke.I usually watch the movement of the intake valve while turning the engine clockwise. the valve will move down then back up. that indicates that the engine is coming up on the compression stroke. and tdc of the compression stroke is where you want them before you set them. You probably know but just incase make sure you set them cold.

Set # 1 Piston to Top Dead Center (TDC). To do this, remove dist cap
and rotate engine ClockWise until rotor points to the Plug wire for Cyl #1
and the timing mark on the Crank Pulley is straight up at the case seam.
( Digression: You may want to make a chalk mark or scribe line on the pulley, if its stock, at the point exactly opposite the Timing mark. Degree pulleys are easy enough to identify TDC for the next Cyl ).

Set the valves for Cyl # 1, now rotate the crank pulley 180 degrees, or one half rotation CounterClockWise and adjust valves for Cyl # 2.
Rotate the crank again 180 degrees CounterClockWise, Timing mark back at the top, and adjust Cyl #3. When done, rotate CounterClockWise once again and adjust Cyl #4. One more half rotation will set the engine back to Cyl #1 TDC for setting static Ignition Points timing etc..
AirCooled VW firing order is 1, 4, 3, 2. Thus when rotating backwards, or CounterClockWise, the cylinder and valve sequence is 1, 2, 3, 4.
