I am familiar with the type-four squareback and fastback, but is this a type-four Notchback?

I've seen pictures of that before and I don't know much about it. I think it was manufactured for a specific market and was never exported. Kind of like the Brazilian Karmann Ghia, or the SP2. It certainly fits the type 4 mold, but I don't know for sure.

There is a Type 4 Notch at the Wolfsburg Museum.

I dont know much about the other car, I have seen that exact same picture before, but it looks as if no one has any info on it, from the lack of air vents in the rear I would say its an early watercooled VW, like the K70.

That's a VW of Brazil 1600 I believe.

ecdez Wed Oct 06, 2004 7:39 am

I was thinking it was Brazilian.

Glenn Wed Oct 06, 2004 7:58 am

Actually those pictures are from my site. I found them awhile ago and the car is in Germany. It's NOT a Brazilia, but a German model that never got past the few that were made.

pretty odd.

ubercrap Wed Oct 06, 2004 7:59 am

Oh, it's air-cooled too, Type III based.

ecdez Wed Oct 06, 2004 8:04 am

Actually, it appears to be type 1 based cooling.

Very interesting.

ubercrap Wed Oct 06, 2004 8:08 am

Nope, not a Brazilia, but definitely a production VW Brazil car.

That car could win an Ugly contest.

Yeah, I know, someone is about to hammer me about trashing the looks of the car. But, it's ugly. And not 'it's so ugly it's cute' kind of ugly. Ugly as in never been asked out on a date ugly.

It's like a Frankencar

DeathBus Wed Oct 06, 2004 9:49 am

A 4 door Type 1 powered car. I wonder what the production numbers were on it?

ecdez Wed Oct 06, 2004 10:17 am

UGLY?!

I respect your opinion, but I think it's cool. More so the one with the 4 headlights than the other. I would pimp that everywhere.

Did anybody notice the blue Brazilian Karmann Ghia beside this one? Eyes like an eagle I tell you  .

Sorry but it looks like the front end of a Pinto.

ecdez Wed Oct 06, 2004 10:27 am

I don't know. I looks an awful lot like the picture below.

There's a few more pics here
http://www.ccwn.org/Karmann-Ghia/BRASIL.HTM

I might not know much, but I can usually spot a VW. My wife thinks its funny because I usually can tell her exactly what it is just by seeing a small piece of it. I think I might be obsessed  .

You sure thats not a Ford?

ecdez Wed Oct 06, 2004 10:43 am

Here's another for comparison.

Pretty much looks like the same front corner

It's the Karmann Ghia TC (Touring Coupe).

The following is a quote from: http://www.angelfire.com/home/ghiagrind3/
"The American market considered that the athletic character of the small cut typical Type 14 was not enough asserted to the eyes of several consumers. So Karmann Ghia had VW of Brazil build an initiative, more athletic model, on the basis of the Type 3 and more or less inspired Porsche 911, the Karmann-Ghia TC (Touring Coupe). "

Made from 72 - 75 only in Brazil, and was never exported. The only inventoried copy in Europe is preserved in the private Museum of Karmann in Osnabrück. If this is true then this picture would have to been taken in South America somewhere, which brings us back to the original car in question. I'm not saying that Glenn is wrong. The picture he has could very well be from Germany, but I believe both cars are of Brazilian origin.

So the TC wouldnt float here, looks alot like a Pinto, How many Pintos did Ford sell?

ecdez Wed Oct 06, 2004 10:57 am

I don't know. That's an interesting question.

If you were at the VW dealership, would you pick the TC over the standard bodied Ghia? I like the look of the TC, but I think I would have to decline.

The more research I do, the more I find evidence of odd VW models that were only produced in Brazil. Why wasn't the Brasalia or the SP2 imported? I'd love to get my hands on an SP2. Notice how they both have type 4 headlights. It's the design wave of the future  .

I like the Brasillia, but the SP2 is not my cup of tea.

ecdez Wed Oct 06, 2004 11:39 am

I'd take either one, but if I had my choice, it would be the SP2.
