The brazilian "VW 1600", produced between 1969 and 1971, had a large use as taxi in big cities of Brazil.

It was called of "Coffin Joe", or "Zé do Caixão", in portuguese, because of it square format and door handles, lokking like a coffin. Zé do Caixão was a director/actor of trash brazilian horror films during the 60's and early 70's.

I almost bought one few years ago, 69 leaf-green, for about 2.500 dollars, all original, with white interior, but I found a better car that same week, my 68 red beetle, and gave up of the VW 1600.

If this is true then this picture would have to been taken in South America somewhere, which brings us back to the original car in question. I'm not saying that Glenn is wrong. The picture he has could very well be from Germany, but I believe both cars are of Brazilian origin.

Not having imported them is irrelavent. As I recall there is sketchy record of one T34 being imported to the US, but the US has more t34's than any other country (can't remember the citation for that). Aso, I know the SP2 was never imorted to the US, but alas, I've seen one in the University disctrict here in Seattle. It's entirely probable that someone just really liked the car and had it exported to God knows where. From what I've heard, exporting old cars isn't that big or an ordeall (albiet expense). The only cars that are difficult to import are new ones, because of the safety regulations varying from country to country.
