| A Syncro (4WD) with 16" wheels and larger brake set-up. More likely something you'd find in Europe or maybe Canada. A step beyond just a regular Syncro, if it's real. |

Lots of "Fugazi" Syncros out there ?? :? Bavarian- you can buy lots of stuff to make your Doka or Vanagon look like a rugged 16" Transporter, from wheels & brakes to skid plates, Heavy duty shocks, rollbars ect.
They look like a Vanagon on steriods...........
Fastfoward.com has some stuff like that. |

| There's more to a 16" than just rims. They have quite a different suspension, modified wheel arches, larger brakes among other things. Not sold new here in Canada, although Tristars were! |

I believe the main difference is the body, it has a LOT of reinforcement (and thicker sheetmetal) than the 14" syncros did not have, different tranny, included a rear diff lock (dont think it is included on ALL 14"), diff suspension, axles, bigger front brakes, wider wheelbase and modified fenders
i would love to have a 16" double cab! but for now my 14" syncro will have to do |

There is a combination of things that make a 16" Syncro. I have a 90 16" Syncro Double Cab. The extra cab reinforcement is one of the hardest parts to duplicate. It is supposedly mainly in the B pillar. 16's also have longer trailing arms in the back for clearing the larger tires and wheels. They also utilize larger drum brakes and bigger front disks, supposedly taken from the LT trucks. One of the easiest ways to spot a 16 is the factory 16" wheels and the black fender arches around the wheel wells. These were also used on the Tri Star models, but the Tri Stars had smaller openings so the arches are smaller. The 16's also had a front skid plate since the spare does not fit in the front clamshell anyway. The CV joints are larger as well, and the outer joints have special guards to protect them from off road debris. Alot of the 16's came with both front and rear diff locks, but not all of them. As far as I know there are only about 5 or 6 16's in North America. Hopefully this helps. I am always wanting to pick up more info on the 16's so if anyone has any let me know.

Pickups (and Double Cab's) do have the extra reinforcement anyway...so a pickup is easy to transform to 16".... if you can find the 16" parts ;) |
