View original topic: 83 Westy stalls, won't restart

Hi. I'm new to the forum and new to Vanagons. Have had lots of earlier air cooled Vee Dubs though. Anyway I've got an '83 wasserboxer Westy that, if I don't give it enough gas when driving off in 1st gear or if I let it stall just idling in the driveway when it's not yet warmed up, I can't get it restarted unless I crawl underneath, unpug the wire to the fuel pump and then get back in and turn the key. When I do this it starts right up, runs for a couple of seconds then dies. Then, I crawl back under, hook the wire back up and it starts up right away and runs happily. I've thought about just wiring in a toggle switch so that I at least won't have to crawl under it twice to get it running again but the anal retentive side of me won't do this unless just absolutely nothing else will fix the problem. Anybody else ever encountered this? Or, if not, any ideas at all?

Thanks.

Have you gone thru the cold start valve check? Also bypass the idle control.
