I have the Next Gen manual for Type 4 upright conversions, and I was thinking of doing it to my rail's engine. Do you guys think I should just stick with the pancake cooling, or should I convert it to upright? I know that the pancake cooling has advantages (I could build a rack over motor to put stuff on; the fan is mounted to the crankshaft, so losing a fan belt wouldn't be a big deal; I can put a Chevy alternator on it if the stock one goes bad.) But I also see disavantages (it weighs more; decreases my departure angle on the rear; weighs more than upright; fan would suck up all the dust my wheels kick up.) Thanks,

| Unless you're putting it in a Beetle or pre-Type 4 Bus, I'd say leave it as-is. You can convert it at any time later on, and there are no engine height or depth issues in a buggy... I say roll with it. 8) |
