HamburgerBrad,

If I ever finish this baja of mine I will take a trip down the Mojave Trail. Where did you start and how long did it take you?

HamburgerBrad Tue Nov 02, 2004 10:26 am

we went really slow. started at about afton canyon and enjoyed it for two days each way all the way to the colorado river and back.

there are some people that go blitzkreig through there and fly through the trail and take freeways back to be home for dinner.

i have an older copy of this book. its definitely interesting reading and gives you the entire history of the trail

ft_irwin, i havn't bought or mounted one yet (my baja is far from being finished), but i plan on doing it like the old style one in this picture, theres plenty of room in that position and you dont have to run many ducts

i also considered putting it on the luggage tray behind the back seat but decided to put an extra gas tank there

that does look good, thats what i kinda had in mind but hadnt found these heaters yet, before next winter i want to have something like worked out.
i too was thinking on puting an extra fuel tank on the package tray, something like an aluminum buggy tank. what are your thoughts on that subject?

I'm gonna get a fuel cell to put on the package tray. Its much more expensive but since its being mounted inside the cab I want the safest tank possible. I've read that its better to position the tank on the floor, in place of the rear seat because a full tank on the luggage tray really raises the center of gravity. But i want to be able to bring friends and family on trips so i need the back seat. Depends on your situation i guess.

oh and there are a few of the old style heaters for sale in the classifieds.
Just search for "eberspacher". Otherwise Espar has a list of distributors on their site. (the one i posted previously.

i am in the same situation on bringing along the family which is why i hesitate to put something inside the car that holds fuel, but you do have a good point on going with a fuel cell. the cost is going to make me wait for that a while though, i will just have to bring along a few fuel cans on the long rides.

Don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for but works for me @ 75-80 MPH and 40 degrees or less on my bike. http://www.gerbing.com/pages/motorcycle.html, all you need is a little wiring skill. Given most of the old VW's I've seen I think if you're driving one you could handle it

Seems like anything below 60 and you guys shit a brick. hehe just kiddin. Whatever you gotta do to get out on the trails.

Oh, and the problem of performance vs heat is very important to me as i live in the northeast, and after much research I decided on a gas heater. Not one of the old eberspacher heaters but one of these, http://www.espar.com/htm/airheat.htm

hey, i'm with you. i'm in PA and it gets below 0 here at least 3 or 4 days a year. and that's nothing compared to my friend in alaska!

In my baja, warmth requires a lot of blankets, a big heavy coat, and your best girl by your side bitching and moaning about how she's freezing. lol

My uncle got pulled over in it once with the blankets. The cop felt so sorry for him, he let him go.

Have you seen those Coleman Procat 3,000 BTU portable propane heaters? I think they only cost about $70 or so and run on 16 oz propane bottles.
