Ok, so someone sent me this pic..and I haven't seen anything like it before. Can someone tell me more about it? Is it original? Custom? Any idea on what year it is? Also, on early VWs is it original for the door handles to be the same color as the car? Thanks.

| It's real---'46 I believe. Owned by Ray Shubert of Volks Authority. VW made a few but I think there are less than ten known. |

I guess it would be like calling a Karmann Kabriolett a "Split Vert" because its from that era (pre zwitter). I Just call it a roll back. |

That car is Ray Schubert's Tuscher roll back, and the photo was taken at Kelley Park. As I recall, (and I could be wrong,) it is a 1948, and it came from either Sweden or Switzerland. I've driven it, and I spent a lot of time in the back seat photographing a few "Spitting to Solvang" stories I did. It's perfect for the rear shots, and the coming-around-the-corner shots.
I do remember that had had an 8-gallon tank, though, as everyone filled up their "normal" splits and Hebs and Ovals, etc, and everybody made it back to San Jose on one tank of gas--except the Roll-back. it ran out of fuel about 4 miles from Ray's shop. For a 25 horse, that thing hauled butt, too. Both times I participated in "Splitting to Solvang", not one car suffered any kind of mechanical malfunction... Ray KNOWS his stuff about the early cars... |

| Here's a little history on that car. It's a 1949 VW which was modified into the rollback by Tuscher of Zurich (Switzerland) for the Swiss Army. It was first brought into the States in 1986 by Jeff Walters who sold it off to Bill Dierickx of Seattle, Washington (now Palm Springs, CA) Then it was sold to Ed Economy (Cerritos, CA) who basically restored it in the early 90s. It was later sold to Ray Schubert in the late 90s (around '97-98?) for about $25k There are only 5 known to exist worldwide |

Cool info. I knew Ed Economy was in there somewhere.
