Anybody know how to remove the lock cylinder from the rest of the latch, so that it can be rekeyed?

FWIW, the glovebox was keyed differently from the doors and ignition. It takes a different type of key, I'm not sure you'll be able to match them all if you are trying to do that. Typically the glovebox matches the decklid and the doors match the ignition.

I don't know about glove box locks but the deck lid can be matched with the ignition.

My bad, your right. The decklid key is the same style as the ignition/doors. The glovebox key is different. On late model verts the ignition/door key is the smaller solid key while the glovebox is the larger VW logo die-cut key. I believe this is by design. Basically it’s a valet key. It allows you to turn over the ignition/door key to a serviceman while being able to lock the contents of the glovebox and trunk.

My '72 Super 'vert has a glovebox lock which takes an SC profile key (which I think is the profile for the Beetle ignition switch 1960-66??), whilst the door locks/engine lid lock/ignition are M profile, I think all the locks are the original factory items.
So, I don't believe that the glovebox key matches the other locks (not on a '72 anyway).
I recently bought a reproduction glovebox lock (think it was Brazilian) and to my surprise found that although it came with a modern key it was also SC profile, just like the original .
I bought a vintage-style repro key blank in the SC profile and had it cut , so now have a new lock with old-style key :)

Once you get the lock off the glovebox door, there's a small roll pin that rides in a groove you have to pull out. Its extremely difficult to grab onto it. Once that's out the lock cylinder will come out.

I have some extra locks and cylinders, so I was going to try and see if a different cylinder would fit into the glove box lock in order to have one key for everything.

I was thinking that the small pin in the grove had to be removed, but was unsure if it just pulls out or if it screws out. I guess I will try to pull it.

That's a good idea. Although I don't use valet service it may be worth keeping the keys different.

Thanks for the help :D

Nessy you're right my '72 vert has the same setup, m profile locks/ignition and the sc (old VW ignition) for the glove box. That's so cool because I thought I had lost the keys to my glovebox and that those keys were off another car. VW must have had extra blanks lying around and decided the lock mechanism was secure enough to make glove box locks with them.

Don't bother, it can't be done. There is no other lock cylinder anywhere that can be installed in your glovebox lock that can be made to work with your ignition/door.
