Hi a friend and I just found 2 Type 4's in a field, (basically were going to be blackberry planters eventually) his is a gold '74 2-dr varient; looks to be l-jet w/AT; i cant belive how complete it is, the interior is in great shape and the only rust on it is surface rust on the pass. side fender. on the inside of the door pillar the vin is: 464...
Mine is a 4-door 5/71 red fastback - looks to have D-jet w/AT the interior is trashed but doesnt look to have any rust in the pans. the vin is: 421...
I have looked at the Type 4 chassis and engine code page and the vins are waay off? am i just looking past something, or do we have some realy oddly placed Type 4's?
Thanks for any info! |

| Congratulations, nice find, and yes I am jealous. If this is your first type 4, welcome to the bastard VW family. Some of your "friends" will try to convince you to take the engine and trash the rest. Don't do it. there cars are excellent vehicles. If you do decide to go that route then at least let us pick through the remains :P . |

Gotta love the 411 nose. The Type4.org site also has engine codes so you can see what you've got. Couldn't make out the pic of the 411 engine code, but most likely a 1700cc, the wagon looks to be a 73', most likely an 1800cc.
Great find, have you bought them or just thinking about it? |

The 41x model is the 2-door sedan.
The 42x model is the 4-door sedan.
The 46x model is the 2-door wagon (variant).

Thanks for all the good info. I was hoping that the 411 would have a good title, but I guess both the 411 and the 412 have this stupid abandoned title thing that we will have to try to go through. If i can get through the title BS then basically the cars are free to us. Besides the title and towing expenses.
Hopefully ..::crossing fingers:::... that the person on the title is willing to give it up..has anyone else tried getting an abandoned title in oregon?
Is it worth my time and effort? I think the car is really cool, and i could do alot with the fI, T4 engine and the AT, and theres lots of trunk room!!!
Oh another question i had, is the AT trannies in the T4 the same as the T3 (borg-warner; 003) AT?
thanks again! |

| Don't know about Oregon, but in I've gotten one in Va before. Basically, we towed the car to a buddys shop and filed for a lost title. Since we had it at his shop, we were able to put a lein on the car for storage fees. The DMV will contact the last titled owner and tell them that someone is applying for a title and ask them if they want to fight it. If they do, then they will tell them about the storage fee that has been amassing for however long and they will usually back down. If they abandoned the car years ago, chance are, they won't care what happens to it. If the guy you are getting the cars from is the last titled owner and he just lost it, then it should be a lot easier. |
