i`m having problems getting my hubs to seal.does anyone know where i can see a diagram for the order which the gaskets and spacers ,go in?it`s a 55 oval and the manual i`ve got is for a later car..

Can't get you the diagram but once you do determine the correct order, realize that it will keep leaking until you tighten the axle nuts.

do you mean the 4 bolts that hold the bearing cover on?i torqued these up but still had leaks.oil is coming out round the splines on the axles.

It will often leak until you tighten up the main large axle nut that holds the drum on.

Here's a picture of the Barndoor Bus rear axle seal layout with the "deflector" plate:

Maybe that helps you because you said you need an "early" diagram?

The order is the same as the later VWs, it just has different pieces.

On my '54 Truck, I had to do one side twice because it leaked out of the same area you are talking about. I didn't get the seal positioned correctly the first time. The second time it leaked a tiny bit but stopped once I torqued down the drum.

My seals leaked until I tightened the axle nut. Learned that from the kind folks here on thesamba.
