View original topic: Pull a trailer with your Baja?
Bad Ephemeris Sat Nov 06, 2004 12:29 pm

So, I put the old 4X4 up for sale and am still planning on picking up a Baja Bug as it's replacment. As the title of this thread suggests, I am interested in finding out whether its feasible to pull a trailer with a bug. My girlfriend really wants a dirtbike, and I'll get her one if I can get along without the truck.... Not that I would be able to get a dirtbike into my truck anyways.. but just a thought. I'm only interested in the possibility of pulling a small trailer for two bikes.

In case anyone is interested here is the link to my truck ad.

my baja can handle about 800 lbs of news paper no problem. I have a 1600 engine and T1 prostreet tranny with 4.37 R&P. I deliver newspaper and on sundays my baja turns into a lowrider. It all depends on how much your bikes weigh, your engine, tranny and tire size...... possible YES

I would be, unfortunately, I also own a complete piece of shit known as an oldsmobile Alero. I'm so upside down on it, i have no choice but to sell the truck... I guess that how it goes.

i know they have trailers for a stock bug, that funky lookin deal with the single tire in the rear, so i imagine that if you have a hopped up motor and a bug trans in your baja you could tow a dirt bike or two plus gear.
look into how to mount up the trailer before you decide on how to build the rear bumper and make accomadations for the placement of the ball hitch.
i assume you are still planning on welding on your baja yourself?

P.S. if your girl rides a dirt bike, marry her!
you wouldnt believe the trouble i am having with my baja just 'couse my woman dosent understand about going hella fast off road.....but that's something different altogether.

Have a look at this thread.
My bug is gonna have to tow a couple of moto's and other assorted things from time to time to, I hope they are up to it..

It should be pretty easy for a bug. I built a trailer hitch for my '67 bus and used it a couple times to pull my 8'x4' trailer with dirtbike on 800 mile round trips. This is with a stock 1600 DP with a freeway flyer trans. I could barely even tell the trailer was there (except when going over the Grapevine).

just a guess here but I can't imagine a little trailer and a couple dirt bikes will be a problem. unless you have a cast iron trailer.
I plan to haul my converted boat trailer and dirt bike around with my baja and expect no problems since I have towed them with small cars before.

I once pulled another bug 20 miles with a towbar with my reduction box equiped 67 baha. It pulled better than it stopped. I don't recommend it though.
