hey out there?...
just trying to find out more about my 1964 so-33..
at least ithink it is an so-33..

Lind Mon Nov 08, 2004 12:04 pm

does the M-code plate say something like A33 or B33 or something like that? if so, then it is an SO-33. they are rare. not particularly more valuable or desireable than any other westy of that era. they are cool.

crofty Mon Nov 08, 2004 12:19 pm

I don't see them all that often. The blue hatchtop that waterman has is a SO33.
There is one in the classifieds now (though it doesn't have any interior pics) that someone thinks is pretty rare based on what the asking price is! Didn't Damon have one a while back? (maybe even the one in the classifieds now?)

At the previous Burgermeister show in Seattle 2 33's showed up. At the Volks-Authority show one pulled up and parked on the street.
I chatted with the owner. Cool Turkis bus. Oh yeah my cousin has one in his driveway he's planning on taking it to Hawaii.

Lind Mon Nov 08, 2004 4:34 pm

does anyone have any evidence of a two tone SO-33 westfalia? every one that I have ever seen or heard about has been a single color. I am talking about only M-coded SO-33 westies. Mosaik kits installed into standard microbuses don't count for the two tone thing.

Old Volks Club Mon Nov 08, 2004 5:20 pm

the camper that i have just purchased is two-toned..
it is a 64..
i bought it wed. from the 93 year old original owner..
he ordered it here in california, and then he picked it up in Germany.
while visiting his son, who was in the service..
it is two-toned, torquoise and a tinted white-torquoise.
there is 6 M-codes,but there is no m-code stating it is an SO-33, What does that mean??
there's a cabinet on the left cargo door, a folding table on the other, and the cargo door panels are a cream colour..the bed is in the middle(made by the two opposing bench seats) that are plaid. the table hangs from the ceiling. the closet is on the passenger side, ice box is in the back on the driverside. the table screws onto the floor ,and the wood seems to be all hardwood (unlike the SO-42 kit.)
it came with a child's cot, grey/yellow full-size tent, and a never-used toilet.
thanks for all the info so far

Damons / the one in the classifeids is rolling with a Mosaic interior....

Lind Mon Nov 08, 2004 6:46 pm

I have seen a special order '61 SO-23 westy that was not M-coded, but there was documentation that it was ordered as such. it was a tourist delivery vehicle.

the mosiak kit is the same as the SO-33 kit, except for the mounting points and the side and roof paneling.

it would nice to see some photos and see all the numbers on the M-code plate. has the bus been repainted?

mr. warehouse Mon Nov 08, 2004 6:51 pm

I think you're buying the motor / tranny set up, not the interior.

Note, no interior shots...

i saw the so called westy bus in person. a real time capsule from the sixties. the first big window submarine hatch camper i've seen in a long, long time. i'm no expert, but if it looks like a westy, has all the correct westy components, its a westy. roscoe needs to see if he can get any of the previous owners documentation. this is nicer than the so42 that he already owns.....if you know that bus,you can imagine what this ones like. i'm happy for him. a true vw guy. good luck dude! :scatter:

Lind Mon Nov 08, 2004 11:10 pm

I have never seen a factory two tone kombi that was not a westfalia.

lenwood Tue Nov 09, 2004 12:20 am

ok lind check this one out....http://www.colomemotors.com/gallery/album64........roscoe,check this one out!

it has obviously been repainted. I would be interested to see the M-code plate from that one.

frankly, I would be surprised if there wasn't a factory two tone SO-33, but I think that it would have been a special option. I have seen a couple dozen of them and they were all singletone originally.

vwspijlbus Tue Nov 09, 2004 4:14 am

http://www.colomemotors.com/gallery/album64 is a very nice camper.
The new owner should reconsider it's curtains. The print is now only visable from the outside. When the doors are opened you'r looking onto the back side wich is not very nice.

Old Volks Club Tue Nov 09, 2004 7:43 am

the one that Drew has is the same model that i have, but the seats have a different color plaid.same with the curtains...
it also came with a locking column and an original never used westie rack...when i asked the man for documentation, he pretty much couldnt remember where he put it.(he's 93.)
it was painted the original colours four years ago. before that it was unrestored and original paint..it was also garaged every night.
about 10 days ago it rolled out of the old mans driveway(poppped out of 1st), and hit a garaged, an SUV, and went through a house..thats why he sold it..it was going about 40 mph..so needless to say, the front is f#cked.but totally repairable..the roof and floor are not buckled or creased..besides that it is one of the cleanest and complete buses i have ever seen.(from the doors back)
would the M-code be different for the kit if it wasnt a US sold bus??
i know that there is no shipping codes for German ordered models..
i asked the man if he orderd the kit from westphalia and had it fitted into a kombi...?but he said no..he ordered a VW camper from the dealership in San Carlos and picked it up in Wolfsburg, it had the rack and all the camper ammentities(stock westphalia) off the lot.
i'll have more photos tomorrow night
thank again...

The kit is pretty much the same like lind said. I looked at the link for the other pics and for sure you're paying for the motor/transaxle combo. It's a cool bus but the asking price is pretty high, in my opinion. I think that were it left stock it would sell for more than it would now.

lenwood Tue Nov 09, 2004 10:23 am

crofty, i saw that bus up close......i think not......like banf said you're payin for the motor tranny and jims labor of love......or love of labor......still a nice ride dough?
