I am in the middle of disassembling my '72 vert[www.geocities.com/dreammotorcar] and I am filling my head with problems I will have to deal with when it is back together. I noticed my transmission(autostick) doesn't want to move out of neutral. Since I am taking the whole car apart what should I look for when I get to the transmission? Could it be as simple as the shift plate or something as complicated as internal transmission problems? I really don't want to do much work on this crazy contraption.

Do you have a Bently manual? There is a big section on the autostick tranny, and may offer some answeres with the troubleshooting section.

Hiya TD,

Know this before you tear into the AutoStick........ 90% of the problems one encounters with this transmission can be cured without ever getting inside the case. The shifting in an AutoStick is an electrical function assisted by the vacuum system. In all liklihood your problem will be found in the electrical system. Possibly in the vacuum system. Unlikely to be inside the case or bellhousing.
If you give me a few more details, I can point you toward the most probable trouble spot. Such as.......does the shift lever move if the engine is off? When you do try to move the shift lever out of nuetral, what happens? Does it move at all? Does it grind?
And..... By all means as been suggested, get a copy of the Bentley. And do visit the VW Automatic Register as Tazz recommended. It's a great source of information for AS owners.

I was thinking it is probably the vacuum system since the car hasnt been started in around 10 years. I don't know if anything changes after it is running since I have never ran the engine. My guess is that since the car only has 70,000 miles on it it probably isn't anything too serious. I will Have to post again after I do the body work and have the tranny/engine back in the car.
