Hiya Vertguy,

I took a look at Cobey's link......... basically that is what you need to do.

However, the actual "doing" is a bit more complicated than the reading. There are some other items to be dealt with as you replace an AutoStick with a manual. For example, you'll need to either adapt your current shift rod or find a new one. You'll have to either adapt your oil pump or buy a new one. And some other similar details to tend to.

Bottom line though is that this is a do-able project. The big problem to be overcome is one that Rob and Dave mentioned, and that is the presence (or, more ominously, the lack of) the clutch tube which runs through the center tunnel. If that tube is not there, I'd spend at least a little time considering living with an AutoStick or selling it outright. If you have the requisite welding skills and a bit of time on your hands, then go for it. If not, have a reasonably deep pocket.

I did the swap in mine and it wasn't hard to do, but it does require some patience. Luckily mine is a 72, that being the year that all beetles were produced with the clutch cable tube, whether or not they were manuals. Other than that it is a straightforward job so good luck with your decision...
