i just put dellorto 40's on my 71 superbeetle and was driving it for a bit until i got my new jets and venturi's which i got the other day, also i was running the carbs with just the velocity stacks (i was told this would be fine until my new filter elements came it) well i took my car out a few days ago to go to the store and when i left to go home and was driving out of the parking lot i heard a nasty clanging, tinging sound. i got the car home (about 1/4 mile from where i was) and proceded to check things out and decided i had to pull the head off. well when i got the head off i found a slug of metal a chewed up piston and head.
lesson: don't be stupid, always run the filters never just velocity stacks.
now i have to get new pistons and heads. |

Thats odd, what kind o metal got sucked thew your carb?
Sounds like when you were putting them on a screw fell down in the head. I've seen that happen with the same results, in my car, i just replaced the head and the bad pistion 8) |

the piece of metal that i found is much bigger than a screw and i see no missing parts from my carbs so i am not sure,
as far as calling me a dummy, no need for that yet, there are just so many more things i can screw up.
i got new heads and pistons this week and i hope this comeing week i can get them on. |

| maybe dirt you sucked in caused the pistons to grind up against the heads and where off that metal? Or is it a solid chunk |

| Had that happen to my bug many years ago, I found the metal chunck to be the valve seat, or part of it. My valve was stuck open as the metal chunck was stuck between the valve and the seat. bad luck or may have something to do with overheating, i.e lean, fan problems or oil cooling troubles. |
