Is there a way to adjust the float on stock '56 engines? My car will die when I come to a stop after driving any distance. No vaccum leaks I can find? Any ideas or info about the float adjustment on 36hp carbs? Thanks.

Hi Strato,
No. You should get a Bentley reprint of the "Volkswagwen Shop manual"!!
Sounds like your idling mixture is too rich if it is dieing when you let up on the gas pedal suddenly.
If your carb leaks fuel out of the throttle shaft areas just after the engine is shut off, it could be due to too heavy of float, faulty shut off valve or no gasket there, too much fuel pressure from the pump.
Either way it would be a good idea to check the sizes of the carb jets not by the # on them, but with a jet size gauge.
