| well the first thing you do is........ahhhh..... well, lets see......ummm...gee i dunno. but i bet a bently shop manual would help with the transaxle teardown and re-assembly. a local vw trans shop could supply the bearings. |

| I got some bearings for my small nut boxes at a local bearing distributor. As for floping the ring gear, you will need to check the backlash you have now, and then make sure it is the same when you flop the diff. It probably won't be. I have never tried to set backlash on a VW transaxle, but I have set up some Chevy truck axles. I think the VW has shims behind the diff bearings and they are used to set backlash. |

vdubber, do you have the adapter to mount the reduction boxes to your bug as well? I considered going this route on my baja but was more or less talked out of it by our fellow samba-ites for three reasons. First and foremost, the adapters to make the swap haven't been manufactured since about 1994, so you will have to find some one fab some up or has a set they want to get rid of. Second, this set up is notorious for wheel hop that will destroy your transaxle and suspension in no time flat. Finally, putting the reduction boxes on your bug will add ALOT of unsprung weight to your suspension, which is bad for hitting the rough stuff.
Basically what it boils down to is what your driving style is. If you want to go fast off road, this isn't the ideal set up. If you're looking for crawling abilitly or just messing around on some loggin roads, this set up might be just fine. Either way, good luck with your car and have fun. |

| VW nut is right. If you want to do high speed offroading, this is not the setup you want. If you want to run huge mud tires and creep around in the woods or climb hills at almost 90 degrees with a small motor, this is the setup you want. I had the no-hop kit on my 67 baha and it worked great. I was running 35 inch mud tires with a 1600 DP and still had as much power as a stock 67 bug. This setup worked well for me because I prefer creeping around offroad. |
