View original topic: EMPI accufire points to electronic conversion kit

I just tried to install the following kit//EMPI accufire conversion kit//. I take the points out. Put the module in and bolt it. Put the accufire rotor wheel in and install the stock rotor backon top of it. For some reason the rotor wheel makes the rotor sit up a little too high..I cant get the distributor cap on without trying to force it down.

I checked the wire guide that goes thru the distrubutor...installed correctly. There is also no unnecessary gaps. Didn't use the spacer proveded cause it's a mech advance dist. Possibilities? AM I supposed to force the dist cap down? I took the accurfire rotor wheel out and put just the old rotor back on..goes down perfectly. Then put the accu fire wheel..back on..sitting flush with the dist shaft...and rotor back on..still..wont let me put the cap on? Please help! ?????

Did you say it's made by EMPI? enough said.

I wouldn't force it on. But i'd carefully try to see what the problem is.

If you remove the 13mm nut that hold the distributor clamp to the case, you can remove the distributor and replace it without having to set the timing. Then you can get a better look at the problem.

Ah Glenn the EMPI stuff ain't that bad it is just about the same stuff you get from Berg and all the other vendors out there....You should know that just about everyone gets their stuff from the same place...

I work at a local vw shop in Riverside CA and I get the same question alot.
The little disk has to be press down enough to crush the 4 ribs under it.
If not the rotor will not sit down enough to allow it to clear the dist. cap, check to see if the ribs under the timing are crushed half way if they are then that should be your problem. Just press it down a little harder.

I don't think that's anywhere near a fair comparison. I worked at Berg's shop for two months a couple of years ago (long story, email me if you really want to hear it) as I was trying to get established in SoCal and the level of quality control and attention to product detail is far greater than anything EMPI imports outta Taiwan/China...I've gotten burned on enough of EMPI's garbage to know ;-) Sadly, though, as a rule, VW people don't want to pay the price for quality, but this point has been made many a time in the past.
Sorry to hijack the thread, just had to put in my .02 :-)

That is great for you but I have been buying stuff from berg since 1982 and he was my idol at one time I even flew up there to take the grand tour in 1990). The last thing I bought from there was a 2 inch header system for 650.00 by the time it got here and it didn't fit! I called to get another one but they told me I was doing something wrong and that they would not return my money. At that point I mentioned I have been buying from them since 82 (this was now 2002) and that this would be the last item I got from them if they did not fix it. Well that was the last thing I ever got and I had to spend 100.00 at a exhast shop to get it to work right.. so now I have a 750.00 2 inch ceramic coated BERG exhaust.

DOn't be fooled they have lots of good stuff left over from mr bergs death but the other half is the same Taiwan junk you get form other places the only thing is that it cost you twice as much to get the berg stuff for half the quality....I would like to see them say they don't sell anything that was made in Taiwan or China I doudt they can claim that anymore....

You know something we all sit here and complain about China and Taiwan junk but most of the crap that us lazy ass american make is crap too...China happens to make some good stuff and they are well far in technology for manufactoring.. THE PROBLEM is US! We tell them to make it cheap because we have a bunch of CHEAP Ass VW people that won't pay the price it takes to make something really good. WE ARE THE CULPRITS OF MAKING CRAP!! Not the Chiniese and not the EMPI's and not the CB's and yes even not the bergs... It's US!

So if you spend the money you might get better quality, BUT beware you don't ALWAYS get what you paid for.....HENCE my berg exhaust!!!!!

I have to agree with Kona. Some of the stuff sold by GBE is your standard run of the mill.

POTL is dead.

But alot of it is still the best out there.

I have one of the early Berg Ignitor ingnitions and it runs great. The coil is a production snowmobile coil, but the control box is custom made.

You hit it on the head Kekonaii, take the computers that everyone is using to read these posts, you'd be hard pressed to find US made part in 99% of them. Americans demand the cheap prices and we suffer the consequences.
