| Ive been trying to find the cause for my oil light coming on if my oil is just barely past the fill line or right on it (usually has to be 1/4" above it) So far I have cleaned the presure release valves and those were pretty clean. A while back i had this trouble and did the test where u put a towel below the oil sending unit and turn the engine over and oil sure enough got every where so i assumed the oil pump was fine and I replaced the oil pressure sending unit. Before that I had replaced the fuel pump. If I smell my dipstick I can smell a faint smell of gas. Is it normal to be able to smell just a faint smell of it? Could this be causeing my oil to thin and thus causing my problem? Is it likely that it is coming from the fuel pump or the heads? I did a comp test about 4 months ago and all were above 100. I changed the spark plugs less than a month ago and none where oily. |

A couple guesses - fuel pump again or maybe a bent pushrob tube
Pull the fuel pump off and see if the bottom of it is wet with gas or the grease is all runny. |

| You have the classic symptoms - low oil viscocity and fuel smell on the dipstick. Yes, looks like a new pump for you unless you have some method of repairing yours. Make sure you put the gasket in. Change the oil. Oh yeah, and it's probably best if you don't drive it until you fix it. |

| Ok well as far as the oil pressure goes i checked the oil pump by haviung my friend turn the engine over with the ignition while i held my fingure up on the oil pressure sending unit whole and i felt a lot of pressure there so the fuel pump is ruled out as well. I rebuilt my carb a couple weeks ago but my carb is 30 years old. Its a 34-pict 3 and the full cut off vavle has been cut off cause the area it goes is bent and renders the valve useless. Is it possible this allows gas to get down the manifold and leak into the oil? Also can i check for bent rod tubes by just looking at them under the car? |
