View original topic: baja out of a 72 super?

is it possible? what would it take to lift it about 4 or 5 inches and throw some (free) 31 inch tires under it?

Nicksan Mon Nov 15, 2004 7:38 pm

Its possible but probably not worth it, just for the fact that it does not have a beam front end. Unless you do some serious modding I doubt you could bet that much lift with the super front end. If your just doing trail riding and not getting to hard with it, It would be ok. If you can sell it and pickup a standard bug that would be a better way to go cuz that gives you much more options as far as a baja goes.

its free and from my granny so

Bugstuff makes a BAJA kit for the super beetle

gyrfalcon84 Mon Nov 15, 2004 8:07 pm

The only time it's worth it to baja a super is when its gonna be used ony on the street. The struts dont hold up at all off road and its to much money and/or work to swap the frame heads when you could just buy a standard beatle for $500. My 2 cents, if you want a REAL baja, sell the super and buy a standard.

this wouldnt be one that would be a class 5, i think thats what its called. all im expecting is just go go thru wet fields and mess around and such. i dont want to attempt 5 foot mud holes ha ha jsut somehthin around with. and hopefully it will be streetable

HamburgerBrad Mon Nov 15, 2004 8:51 pm

you seem adamant about doing it.

it is possible with the fiberglass and some creative fabrication, but dont expect much travel in the front. you are most likely going to be rubbing those 31 inch tires after a couple inches of upward movement on that fiberglass. even for moderate off-roading i will follow the norm suggestion around here and say sell the car, buy a cheap standard and then get to work.

sixt5 Mon Nov 15, 2004 8:54 pm

well, im like begging my dad to let me get the car in the first place so im not getting too much lienentcy to begin with. so i figued i would trim the fenders or even take them off totally and that would give my some clearance for tires and twisting the bars and such for some lift.

HamburgerBrad Mon Nov 15, 2004 8:57 pm

twisting the torsions will give you rear lift. there's jack you can do to the front unless you have a custom suspension spacer built

well anythign woul dbe better then nothing. plus those bugs get way better gas mileage then my mustang (like 12 or 13mpg)

dont expect 25 miles to the gallon with a stock tranny, stock engine, and 31" tires

HomespunKustom Mon Nov 15, 2004 9:04 pm

creative fabrication = mass cutting :D

sixt5 Mon Nov 15, 2004 9:05 pm

jeeze lol you really like to kick a perosn while hes down dont ya

HamburgerBrad Mon Nov 15, 2004 9:06 pm

i dont like to see someone modify a car to do something it cant

sixt5 Mon Nov 15, 2004 9:08 pm

anythign done to this car would be better then sitting in grass that is taller then the car. hasnt ran in prolly 7 years or so. it is being to no use at all

HamburgerBrad Mon Nov 15, 2004 9:10 pm

so work on making it driveable. fix the brakes, tune up the engine and drive it for a couple months. then sell it if you want an off-roader and buy a nice late model standard just in time for spring

i have to agree with Brad, fix the little stuff and get it running good and then drive it to a job untill you find a buyer, then sell it for as much as you can. with the money from the sell find a solid standard with as little rust as you can find and baja out that car. if your parents are on you a** show them you are responsible by fixing up the bug you have, working and SAVING your money to put into your baja project. if you are seriouse about this you can definately make it happen.
just my 2cents worth...
