alright, so i'm getting ahold of a baja in the next couple weeks... i'm wondering if you guys have an experience-based opinion on which exhaust to run on it.
Right now it has the teepee exhaust on it...
a-like so:
But i'm considering running cannons on it...
a-like so:
see, i'm concerned with a couple things:
1) if i go barreling through some puddles or something, i don't want the exhaust to get all full of water... you know... water in exhaust = bad
2) the cannons i'm looking at have baffles, and i don't know how picky cops will be about the teepee header and how loud it is and stuff like that... also as far as getting it inspected (as my uncle had trouble with it at times.)
3) will the cannons throw off the overall look of the baja? anybody have pictures of a baja running them?
4) Cip1 says it won't fit standard sized VW bodies because it will hit the rear apron... now, it's got the deck removed and all that, in pure baja style, but would i still need to cut it out more?
i wish i had pictures to share... i've only got this one:
which i'm sure doesn't REALLY help.
anyway folks, thanks a lot, you know more about the subject than i do, which is why i ask. |

If the body is cut enough for a baja kit, you should have no clearance issues on the dual cannons; I've seen bajas & even more 'glass-bodied buggies with them.....my next set of pipes for my Manx is a set of those, as a matter of fact. A friend of mine who is a welder is setting mine up with flanges instead of the traditional 'slip-fit' joints; this should help prevent those annoying leaks at that spot. He's been running flanged dual cannons on his Domus flatbed Beetle for about 5 or 6 years now, with no issues.
The upswept pipe you currently have would make me worry more about water than the cannons, actually. A neighbor had a baja when I was young, and he kept a coffee can over his when it was parked, to keep rain & foreign matter out of it.
The cannons won't stick out as far as the upswept one either; many local authorities may see a pipe that sticks out as a hazard to anyone who might come into contact with it....even though common sense dictates that you don't touch someone else's car(much less a hot exhaust system). |

My uncle kept a tennis ball on his... he tended to forget it was on there and start the car up, blowing it across the parking lot.
when he lost the last one, he stopped putting them on, and it sat in a barn for a while...
then he started it up again and it was blowing flames out of the pipe.
I'll bet it looked cool, but i'd imagine it was really bad for the car. lol |

| dont forget, those stingers also come bent over to the side to which you can attach a spark arrestor, or bent over to the side with a muffler build in. you arent stuck with the straight up stinger though many people would think so |

If you want the noise of the stinger do as Brad says as get the down-turn. That way when you get sick of hearing it a muffler is no big deal to install. I do not remember where you are from but trust me I have a new motor now that some moisture got into my teepee. Mine had a muffler but not down swept enough
When I am offraod and want to annoy people off comes the muffler. When it gets driven very much on road or the wife is riding on goes the muffler.
The stainless muffler on the PMR car sounds good though. It is what I have on mine. Not National Park rated though. You can drop a golf ball through it and it does not slow down.

I don't like dual cannons because after a while, the internal baffles tend to rattle around and sound horrible. Not to mention there's no scavenging affect with the dual cannons. Bobcat style is pretty cool, and there's lots of modular mufflers and spark arrestors than can be changed out with ease.
This unit isn't too bad. I like the sound of the SuperTrapp.
