I know we've talked about this a lot, but I have a couple questions that I haven't seen addressed...
Does the SB disc brake kit widen the track width on the front of the car? I don't have much room to play with and can't afford for the wheels to stick out any further...
Also, are the disc brakes better about locking up than drums? My stock drums lock up pretty easily, which can be scary. I even had a friend tell me "I don't worry about getting discs because I'm just running 135's, and since they don't get much traction, it'd be even worse with better brakes." I don't believe this to be true, but wanted to get some more input...
Thanks. |

Using stock VW disc brakes won't widen your track at all.
Your braking problem is not at the front. Your rear brakes have to be increased to compensate for the reduced effect of your front tires. Late Type 3 rear drums would work great. |

Yes the disks will lock up easier than drums. But you do need to look into getting the rears to help more. Type 3 rear drums are nice. But 4 wheel disks is the way to go. I love it specially on snow and ice.

135's and disc brakes are totally possible. Oh, and the tires will still tuck under the fender just fine. I'm not sure, but I think the track width is identical. I have the aircooled.net disc brake conversion, by the way.

| But is it worth it? Do you have to have wider tires to reap the benefits of the disc brakes, or will it be a noticeable improvement even with small, skinny tires up front? |

I made the conversion, and have noticed a significant improvement in braking ability ... especially in wet conditions. You MUST adjust your rear brakes properly or you'll get lockups of the front brakes on panic stops.
The track width will not change, as you are not changing your spindles. You're simply exchaning your drum for a Ghia rotor and caliper.
By the way, I run stock 165/15 tires.
You can see the brake installation on my website.
