View original topic: Flat Four BRM's and cb disk brakes

i bought the cb disk brake kit and i am wanting to put brm's on but the wheel studs are to short. i have gone to all the part stores looking for a longer stud with the same size knurl as the ones that came with the kit. the only problem is the longer the stud the larger the knurl. i am sure that someone else has figured this out already so if you could let me know what i need to do it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

That is an easy fix! Send the cb kit back and get the socal kit! Socal's kit uses lookalike drums that use the proper lugs for ANY style wheel! They also allow you to use your factoy speedo cable

Why would anyone want to downgrade from the superior CB kit to the boat anchor SoCal kit????? (fyi, the CB kit allows the use of the speedo too>)
Contact CB, they sell different versions of their kit, one of which comes with longer studs. Do not attempt to press out the studs yourself, others have broken the ears off trying. I'm pretty sure you could remove your rotors from the Al hubs and send them back for CB to swap the studs for you.

Socal all the way. At $499, too. Boat anchor strong! BTW, it uses genuine VW calipers from Germany. :D

I bet the SoCal rotors weigh the same as the entire CB kit. What you don't realise is that with those heavy "flywheels", they slow you down when you are trying to accelerate, and they keep you going when you are trying to stop. All things being equal, they won't stop as well as the CB brakes. A lot of the So Cal kit's braking power is wasted in slowing the rotors instead of the car.
You don't have to modify the CB kit to fit fake BRMs, you just have to get the right version of the kit.

They do weigh a bit more, but then so does a full tank of gas. (and a spare!) They are made from one-piece of steel, not two pieces riveted together (alum and steel, I believe). I agree with your theory Bruce,(unsprung weight), but I think it is more than offset by other factors. :)

They weigh a lot more. When I was at a local plating shop picking up some parts there was a cart full of the SoCal rotors getting yellow cad by a local car builder. I picked one up and couldn't believe they would make something that heavy. Both front and rears were equally heavy.
And they are not steel, they are cast iron.
The CB rotors are not riveted to the aluminum hubs, they are bolted, just like the way Porsche does it. Reducing unsprung weight improves ride, handling and braking. Its not a theory. The fact that people buy the SoCal kit proves they don't understand the concept.

I went with the Socal set-up because of construction, and the German parts. I won't be doing any critical racing or anything in my split. But, yes, ideally the lighter unsprung weight, the better. It also uses common rabbit or jetta pads.

thank you for all the responses. although all i really wanted to know was if their was any place that i could buy the correct length stud with the same size knurl as the cb kit comes with, which is a 14.1mm knurl and i believe it needs to be about 50mm long. guess i should have just asked that in the first place huh? as for the quality of the kit i think it seems to be well built and i like the fact that it came with dropped spindles. and now that i know that it is lighter just makes it better. and as far as the cb kit pushing the wheels out further i have already narrowed the beam 4.5 inches.

thanks

How 'bout a website for SoCal? I'd like to check their kit out. KP

The thing that sucks about the CB kit (for me) is the fact that I am paying for drop spindles although I already have a pair. The So Cal kit does not have spindles in the kit (good for me) but it costs about the same as the CB kit.

The reason you have to buy dropped spindles with the CB kit is because your old spindles don't fit the calipers that the kit uses. Buy the complete CB kit and sell your CB dropped spindles in the classifieds. They will sell quickly.

Kanzapanzer, socalautoparts.com. Right on.

Also, this kit is available in wide-five or four lug. It's quite a kit for the money.
