Just bought a 73 SB and the guy I bought it from didn't have an ignition key so can't release the steering wheel to turn the wheels. What's my best soultion to this problem. New ignition, locksmith out to try to make new key or what.

I don't think you can remove the lock cylinder without the key.

Your best bet is to disconnec the steering column from the rack and pinion unit. That was the wheels can be turned by hand.

But you still have the lock problem that will have to be delt with.

there is a chance that at least one of the door handles still matches the ignition tumbler.

So use a phillips screwdriver to remove the one screw holding the door handles on ( it is just behind the rubber door weatherstripping) and knock the handle tword the front of the car to get it off.

Take it to a locksmith who can cut a key from the code ( hopefully they are both coded the same, but sometimes over the years the handles get changed and mismatched etc.)

If your in luck it will fit the ignition too.

When I bought my 74 SB it was the same way. The colum was identical as my 72 standard so I asume that your 73 is the same. Take the wheel off and remove the blinker assymbly. Then undo the two bolt plate that holds the ignition/lock assymbly in. There is a little hole there somewhere that you have to use a small allen key or somthing to release the lock portion and pull. It should come out.
