I have an interesting thing going on with the speedometer on my '73 Vert. Sometimes it works fine and then at other times it kinda wigs out on me. Sometimes it will proceed normally to about 40 mph, when all of a sudden it will take a dive toward 15 MPH and then pop back up. It will do this several times and then settle back into normal operation. Occasionally it will start this nonsense at about 25 mph and do it several times, before switching to its more regular pattern of 40 mph dives. I may be imagining this, but it seems to be worse when its chilly out and almost non-existent when its warm.

Can anyone shed some light or offer a solution?

Make sure the cable is lubed up well and is connected properly to the drivers side front hub. I think that is supposed to be held in place with a little circlip. You can actually chuck that cable, after lubing, in a low speed cordless drill to see if the cable is turning smoothly. 90% of the time it is the cable. Replacing the cable isn't a big deal either.

Also make sure you are connected properly and tight to the back of the speedo. Sometimes they wiggle loose.

I have never had the speedo go bad, I am sure they do it just hasn't happened to me - yet.

What you're describing sounds almost certainly like a gunked up speedometer cable. As you drive more, the junk in the cable gets heated up, and thus thinner ... think of it as a thick grease ... the hotter it gets, the thinner it gets.

Take the cable off, and shoot some carb cleaner down it until it runs clean. As the previous reply stated, you can put the end of the cable in a multi-speed drill and run it very slowly to turn the cable as you're cleaning it.

Once it's very clean, re-lube it properly with a very light (almost liquid) grease. Should turn smoothly for you after that.
