I found this picture in the gallery, I saw this bus in VW TRENDS when i was like 11 years old. It is the bus that started the dream. Anyone else remember the instant they got hooked?? Im sure this has been discussed but finding the picture took me by suprise.

Hell yeah, seeing a freshly done velvet green 21-window roll up to a local show got me. |

my bro had a friend who asked my folks to store his pos bus in our yard when i was a kid. that was the first split i ever saw. years later, when i went to look at a want ad classified for my bus, i became hooked instantly and it has not stopped since! |

well, that 70s show got me hooked on 21 windows (or was it a 23?), but i cant really say what got me hooked on bus.
i remember reading a book about a guy driving from Quebec down to southern US in a bus when i was in high school.
but that's about it |

When I was a kid in the 70's I walked to the school bus stop through a college parking lot, and I remember an old red kombi/standard...it just stood out for some reason - I remember knowing it was different somehow, and always checking it out when I walked by...it had a bed in the back!!! wow - a car with a *bed*!!!! Now that was cool...it's been downhill ever since...

wow, i was looking at a bus very similar to that one yesterday, trying to convince the owner to either sell it or at least cover it(with something other than the pine needles it's got). og white paint w/t panel with the same window and pop top cut in. no brms though.
my first was a red and white 15 window deluxe in either a hot vw's or vw trends a class mate had in high school. slightly lowered, and i want to say it had those wide 5 fake porsche wheels on it. I couldn't believe hoow many windows it had. I didn't see a 15 in real life for 7 years after that!
east coast sucks! |

mine was a mid 60's pearl white westy weekender of some older surfer dude that was featured in a vw trends i think around '98 or '99...it had surf board curtains and a lime green striped longboard on the roof rack...the photos at dusk at the beach were exceptional... |

Ronnie, you must make me a promise. That you either get that guy to sell it, cover it, or at least get some pictures for me! Please...I'm always looking for more Riviera pictures, especially interior pics!

OK ok I will admit it when I was young there was a guy from Fountain Valley, CA (the city next to me) that had a Yellow and White 21 window (yes I said yellow). It was even a cover car on VW Trends.
You see I was born into bugs as it was my families only car for a while, but it was after seeing that bus when I realized that I wanted one really bad. |

I'm exceptionally skilled at the art of pestering people until i get their run down old buses, and I will not give up! Sadly the interior is turning to shit quickly. Oregon weather is the worst on wood interiors. mold everywhere. it's so wet inside the new wheel cylinders he had in the cargo floor rusted inside the box. |

Well, if you can at least tell me if the original lamp is in there, that would rock.

I definitely remember that bus and took some pictures of it myself back in '97 in the parking lot of the Irvine Crowne Plaza (I think it was just a Holiday Inn back then). That was a really cool looking bus and I'm sure it helped start the dream for me, even though it was another 5 years before I got my first split window bus. Now I'm looking for my second one, I guess you can't just have one...
My first real split bus memory was Tom Brouillette's very nice original '53 Deluxe on the way to a VW show in Niagra Falls, NY in 1988 or '89. We let Tom set the pace out on the NY Thruway with his 36hp? motor. At one point we were doing about 70mph and the Berg oil dipstick light was flickering in my '71 Westy so I pleaded with Tom to slow down. Tom replied that he didn't really know how fast he was going because his km speedo was pretty much pegged the whole way!
We switched drivers around later on and I rode with Tom in the '53 with the sunroof cranked open. It was a blast. The seed was planted:) |

I got hooked when I was backing a 21 window out of the shop I work at. I still want a 21 window, but settled with a s.c. :D |
